Two casts of two incredible film adaptations of the same musical unite as one in this supercut of the 1961 (Robert Wise/Jerome Robbins) and 2021 (Steven Spielberg) versions of the "Tonight Quintet" from "West Side Story," brought to cinematic life by Russ Tamblyn, George Chakiris, Rita Moreno, Richard Beymer (dubbed by Jimmy Bryant) and Natalie Wood (dubbed by Marni Nixon) in the '61 film, and Mike Faist, David Alvarez, Ariana DeBose, Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler in the '21 film, along with both versions' Jets and Sharks respectively.

Thanks everyone for the always positive comments on these supercuts! Really appreciate it. With the one year anniversary of Spielberg's film being here, here are two new WSS supercuts:

I just realized something about this song, when Tony says "Tonight there will be no morning star." He's right because he dies that night and never sees the sun again.

The transition from Rita singing while putting on stockings, to Ariana singing in the church... MMM. They both deserved their Oscars man...

I've seen lots of movies in my life, and I've seen lots of remakes. But I've never before seen a remake that was exactly as magnificent as the original. Both of these films are spectacular!

What's unique is how "America" in the remake was brightened up, while the original was mostly dark with blacks, purples, and deep reds. Yet, for "Tonight", the remake switched from BRIGHT reds to more dark blues. Instead of police light hues, he goes for smoke and shadows.

I love it! It’s double quintet with all of them.

Chills!!! The Quintet is one of my favorite numbers, not only in the show, but in all theater music. The music is sensational, coupled with Steven Sondheim’s lyrics... I never get tired of this.

Of all the different remixes, this is one of my favorites. I grew up with the original 1961 version and the blended of both this and Spielberg’s version is so incredible and the blending of the voices is like combining colors on a painting. This is *_ART._*

I usually don't like "super cuts" especially when it comes to material that I love and know very well. But your editing is beyond excellent (on both this video and "America"). No performance or lyric or note of music was sacrificed. Well done.

Hearing Marni Nixon and Rachel Zegler sing as Maria together made me tear up a little bit, not gonna lie.

I will never get tired of this quintet

To me, this video is just perfect evidence that both versions of this film are brilliant. There were enough differences in the remake that it didn't feel cheap or unoriginal, but not so many that it felt like they were dishonoring the '61 version. I'm really excited to see what DeBose and Faist do moving forward.

This is such a masterful blend of the two versions that highlights each of their strengths. Both movies are masterpieces in my opinion

The finale from about 2:32 on is my favorite part. I love it because it's complicated. You have the lovers and the gangs singing in counterpoint with each other; its brilliant.

I do love that eerie dark red glow in the original version when the gangs are on their way--I tell you what, Spielberg's version is brilliant and I love it, but the 1961 version didn't win 10 Oscars for nothing! It's a masterpiece for the ages.

I wanted to applaud Spielberg as soon as I saw Anita’s part. They managed to transform the most awkward and dehumanising part into the most ironic and hilarious one. And Maria not being passive and walking just like Tony gives another powerful dimension

This is so great. I’ve been flipping back and forth from one movie to the other on HBO MAX ever since they came on. Can’t believe Spielberg and the movie itself didn’t win Oscars.

The '21 version has more action, riding the subway, the scene in the church where Anita sings and is hushed, a lot of clever Spielberg interventions! But the music is absolutely the same as the Bernstein children required!

I got goosebumps and eargasm listening to this. You're fantastic.

The editing of this sequence in the 61 film is so brilliant I thought any mash-up would only ruin it. But this is extremely well done and just combines the best of both.
