Ariana DeBose’s line delivery, facial expressions, and body language feels like a masterclass in acting! So many layers in this scene. The way she delivers “He shot her, María is dead. You tell him that ” slightly hinting at Anita’s dishonesty while maintaining her heartbroken demeanor, is SO impressive. And her voice breaking while yelling at Valentina gave me chills! Her portrayal is much different from Rita Moreno’s Anita yet just as powerful. She truly deserves the Oscar.

Filming this scene must have been a little strange for Rita Moreno. Before, she was the one who almost got assaulted, and now she's the one saving Anita.

“No yo soy Americana. Yo soy puerto ricana.” I think that’s the line that might get her an Oscar. It still sends chills down my spine. I really hopes she wins!

Anita went from being in love with America in the morning and probably on her way back to Puerto Rico by evening. Amazing how a confrontation like that and all of that loss can change a person. So very tragic. In her mind she probably felt that Tony was just like them and wanted to protect Maria, as well as not care of the consequence of telling that lie. It was like her (controlling) way of saying "leave Maria alone." Of course, it was not the way I wanted it to play out. I would have loved to see Maria and Tony get away.

The girls knowing what the Jets were going to try and do to Anita and them trying to help her is what humanity is and I thought was a brilliant add to the movie. Humanity is what is missing. And yes, she was a traiter.

I love in this version, Graziella and the other girls tried to help to help Anita before and almost during her assault. And even after the girls got kicked out, they stayed and where yelling for the boys to stop until Valentina intervened. I also noticed that they didn’t leave until she left to make sure she was ok

0:26 you can see Graziella and the girls still sobbing after the shock, also Graziella wearing Riff’s shirt adds emotional delivery to the scene, it’s heartbreaking as it may represent his character in the scene

The way she said “you tell him that” gives me goosebumps, cures my depression and sends my wig flying.

She’s a brilliant dancer. A world class singer. But her acting, especially this entire scene, is why she won. What a legend in the making.

Seriously, this is my most favourite scene in the entire movie. It just has all that depth, all that hatred, all that rage, and knowing that the so-called "American dream" was never on her side has vanquished all the love she had inside. She's not an American, she's a Puerto Rican.
And nothing in the world, not even "love", not even "the American dream", ... will ever change that.

The Oscars for her was very well-deserved. You go girl.

This scene definitely is the one who will gives Ariana the Oscar this Sunday. Let's be honest, how can you watch this and not give her the award? She's absolutely PERFECT.

I hated this scene. I mean, it's outstanding, but Anita was right. She was giving a roof to those pigs. And the Jets act like she didn't lose someone too. And someone much dearer to her than what Riff was to those idiots. And what's worse, Valentina doesn't kick them out after seeing what the Jets did to Anita. UGH I HATED THE ENDING BUT I LOVE THE ACTING!! Especially Ariana's and Rachel's.

So fitting that Rita Moreno won the Oscar for this role in 1962, and Ariana Debose won it for this role in 2022. Exactly 50 years apart.

Such a powerful scene, I hope that Ariana nabs the Best Supporting Actress Statue for her captivating performance. She really makes you believe in Anita's anguish, after losing her love, and becoming more disillusioned with America. 😭💔

Being the victim of a rape or attempted rape is a very traumatic experience and allows you to say or do anything without judgment. Anita in her despair and anger saying María got killed doesn't deserve blame for Tony hearing it and then getting killed himself and in both versions, her not being present when he's killed or after is very appropriate: she's washed her hands of the whole thing and she's completely allowed to do so. She's absolved of any wrongdoing.

The scene that won Ariana DeBose that Oscar, that was a performance you don’t come around to see often.

if the movie was only the five seconds of her saying "yo no soy americana, yo soy puertorriqueña" it would deserve best picture, best costume design, best cinematography, album of the year, best soundtrack etc etc etc

Steven Spielberg just announced that he will never direct another musical again. Truly a pity when he made a masterpiece for the ages. But it’s fair enough, as the world didn't deserve his masterpiece, why would he give us another one? This important movie flopping made this even more heartbreaking
