You can also mix the types of running you do. I am a long-distance runner. I do other workouts (wife is a fitness trainer) but I need my mileage. I am alternating high-intensity weeks (1 reps session [4x4x400m at 1K max pace], 1 3K pace session, 1 interval session [8x1K at VO2max]) and cardio weeks (1 10K pace session, 1 tempo repeat session [4x3K at LT pace], 1 10 miles pace session), plus the long run at the weekend. This works well to lose weight and build muscle... if you do some cross-training and weight-lifting too the other days.
But having been in the ultra-runner world for many years, I can safely state that running long distance weeks (40K+) maintains you lean.

Here's an interesting tidbit. If you take a person who is sedentary who has not been active at all through his/her life and then you take another person who has been a life long runner but never really having done any power, strength or speed work, the person who is sedentary will actually have more power in his legs than the runner! That is something I actually learned in my motor control class by a professor who studies motor control and neuroscience of physical fitness. This is why I only run 1-3 miles a week but do it only after I've done a bike ride to simulate running in a more fatigued state. Cycling and rowing are actually more efficient ways to do cardio since you are actually exercising with some resistance. I will do a half marathon or shorter race now and then, but only sparingly.lol

How do you suggest training for distance? Training for a tough mudder next May and would like to be able to run 5 miles by then.
