Counting Calories vs. Tracking Macros for Weight Loss

One of the most complex parts of losing weight is counting calories & I have good news... You might not have to do it!

If you’ve followed my training methods, you know I hardly ever talk about counting calories. I often talk about eating the right amount of macros or macronutrients
which are protein, carbs and fat.

There's a chance even if you're eating the right macros and micronutrients that, you're still overeating. This is where tracking Calories MIGHT be helpful. If you’re eating more calories than what you’re burning, you’ll gain weight or body fat regardless of the right split of macros.

I don't usually leave comments on YouTube videos, I just hit the like button but in this case I want to share my personal experience.I follow Magnus philosophy of counting macros (I used to be a counting calories maniac!)along with workouts i've been doing the last few months from his app and i'm telling you that if you are consistent with this lifestyle you will actually see crazy results! My body is leaner, tonner than ever and muscles are shown in places i didn't even know muscles excisted! It's actually a combination of nutrition and workout and for the first time in my life I'm never hungry and i feel energetic throughout the day! Thank you Magnus!

Hi Magnus, this is a fantastic and very helpful video! Thanks for the tips.
I was having a hard time explaining to a friend why it's not the best approach to only count calories and only eat ready-made junk from the frozen dinner aisle. Your video put all the info into a nice and easy to understand explanation!

In 2020 I discovered a type of physical activity that was so much fun, I was able to keep it up every day. I showed up every single day, no breaks, and began to see results - my cardio fitness improved, fat went down, strength developed. But in December I got Covid and was super sick for two weeks, after which I felt "better" (read: I didn't feel like I was going to cough up a lung every day). Months later, when I was considered "cured" I noticed that the same type of workout I did in 2020 was incredibly hard to get through. I felt out of breath and like all the fitness I gained last year went away and I am back to feeling like a potato. However I still haven't quit my very fun workouts and even though they are physically hard, they help with my mental health and keep my mood up.

Here are my questions:
- Will I ever regain my 2020 level of fitness, will things start to feel good again? How long should recovery from long Covid last and are there any tips to get better sooner? Family members have told me to take days where I don't do anything, but I am afraid that if I break the habit for one day, it will turn into two days, a week and then I'll quit.
- How can I structure my nutrition to help my body recover and regain its energy?

TL;DR maybe next video could be about workout and nutrition tips for bouncing back after Covid. :)

P.S. I absolutely love your way of presenting information, and I am so grateful you share from your rich experience and even include remarks and advice for vegans! I am currently binge-watching all your videos.

Great tips. My favourite morning sandwich is with banana, dried tomatoes in oil and cheese. I do not know it's healthy but is tasty. You can use different types of bread.

Great video (as always!) Could you please explain Macro Ratios & what to aim for when trying to loose weight/body fat? And the best way to calculate calories and what number of calories to aim? Thank you!

This is the first weight loss meal plan when my meal plan/diet doesn’t me feel hungry all time to the point of not being able to focus or be productive throughout the day because of thinking about food all the time

Great advice. There's nothing wrong measuring macros with a scale at the beginning. In a week or 2 you get used to the size and won't even need a scale. Loved your comment about not being able to overeat if the macros are right.

Great video, Magnus. I'm a hardgainer, and I wanted to know if focusing more on macros rather than a specific number of calories is still good advice for someone like me who is trying to gain weight. My issue for a while has been either meeting my daily Macro goal and not having enough calories, or meeting my calorie goal but going over my Macro limit (on carbs, especially). Thanks!

Thank you very much for the inspirational approach to a healthy way of eating without counting all day. What does "a fist full" look like? Is it the amount comparable to the size of your fist or the amount you could grab and hold it in your fist? Thank you for your help!

In your professional opinion, are there gender differences when it comes to training and nutrition? I don't mean when there are different objectives (gaining muscle versus getting lean) but for example if a man and woman both wanted to get stronger would their nutrition and training be the same?

Hi Magnus, I am currently on a weight loss journey, and nutrition can feel somewhat overwhelming and complicated. I just want to ask how do you know what proportions of your macros to go for? And does it matter if you are on the higher carb, low fat and moderate protein or go for protein and carb about the same and a bit lower fat?

Haha my fists are tiny :D I'm to lazy to weight my food, so that sounds like a proportion size control method which fits me. Thank you!

How about the amount of fiber we eat? Doesn’t that play a big role in weight loss?

Do you have to recalculate macros everytime you lose weight or do you use the beginning macros until you hit your goal weight?

Great advice, thank you. Can you maybe react in your next video on other fitness youtubers like Greg Doucette and say whether they are right or wrong. Or you could react to diets of other actors and say if they are natty or not?…
