As someone who lost 20kg... Counting calories works. But not for everyone. There was a time that i was obsessed with calories. But now i pay more attention to the protein, carbs, fats and fiber. This makes a huge difference. You just have to be careful to not get obsessed over counting calories

Its not a ridiculous way at all. It's an imperfect way that works.
It might not be 100% scientific correct to say that a calorie is a calorie. But actively watching your intake and expenditure will allow you to control your fat percentage.

Count your calories to make sure they’re below your daily energy expenditure, and don’t eat trash.
