Why Is Everyone Moving to Utah? (Mostly Californians)

People are flooding into Utah. This has been going on for a while but has really picked up steam in recent years. Most of the people are coming from California. All over California, not just Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Bernardino. It isn't just the real estate bringing them in. A quick-thinking realtor might tell you that, but it isn't 100% true. People are moving to Provo, Salt Lake City, and Ogden for a variety of reasons, and that is what this video is looking at.

Hey, I made a mistake. I was thinking of Nevada when I said Utah didn't have a STATE INCOME TAX. Sorry. Utah has a flat 4.85 percent individual income tax rate.

I lived in Utah for 2 years, and in that small amount of time, it had inflated so much because of its popularity that I had to move away due to the cost of living.

I moved to Utah about two years ago, and overall, I love it. I moved here for a combination of the factors you mentioned (strong communities, low crime, good schools, semi affordable) but the number one reason you didn’t mention is that just about everyone in the Utah front range is 30-60 minutes away from world class skiing! As a native Coloradan, who still loves CO, this is truly unbelievable! Plus there are many different roads to the resorts, so not everyone is stick in traffic on one road (I-70). Essentially, you can live a normal middle class life in Utah, and almost have the proximity to skiing that people would pay millions for in other states. The trail running and mountain biking are also incredible here.

As for the LDS thing, I’m Catholic and have engaged in many conversations with LDS neighbors and friends. There’s a lot to say about this, but overall, I think the positives of the LDS culture are a clear net positive for non-Mormons as they foster a caring and friendly and safe culture, generally speaking.

Been in Utah my whole life and I agree, my neighborhood is safe and my neighbors are chill.

Californians moving here, remember you are a refuge not a missionary, leave your issues were you came from.

I retired from the military and moved my family to Utah in 2005. The good far outweighs the bad and, overall, we love it here. We are not LDS but chose to live in northern Utah County, which is known for being a very high percentage LDS area. My LDS neighbors are great. We politely made it clear from Day 1 that we are not interested in converting to their faith (we're Catholic) and we have tried our best to be great neighbors to them.

The biggest negative here is that the infrastructure has not kept up with the population growth. Traffic is horrible and, despite what Briggs said in the video, many schools are very crowded. The high school my kids attended was built for 2, 000 students but had well over 3, 000 students while they were in school. I taught at a high school that had 45-50 students in many core subject classes.

If you like the outdoors, there is no place better than Utah.

The home prices in Utah have climbed significantly thanks to people fleeing Krazyfornia. Like Idaho, Nevada, and Oregon they will make it harder for the people from Utah to be able to afford a house.

As a Utahn the problem isn't about a lot of people moving in, it's about people in the state government not understanding what good urban planning looks like.

We're full. For those who already moved here, do NOT forget the policies you fled.

My son lived there for 6 months and I loved visiting him. Wonderful people, a lot of things to do both inside and outside, and beautiful scenery.

I'm a Utah native who just moved back from California. We moved here mostly for the family but a large part of it was because the healthcare, especially mental, in California was awful.

It's not the people moving from California into any state, it's the politics that follow them

I live in downtown Salt Lake City. It’s a beautiful city, and really has come alive over the past couple of years! One thing to keep in mind when moving to Utah; Utah county = heavy lds culture influence. Salt Lake county = like any other city in the US; Salt Lake county is like it’s own state compared to all of the other counties. I love it here!

Why Is Everyone Moving to Utah? (Mostly Californians) So they can ruin it by trying to make it like the state they left... Much like every other state So-Californians move to. Nor-Cal is still ok, for the most part but if someone offered me a 100 million dollar home, in So-Cal, for free; I'd turn that thing down faster than an auctioneer talks!

I moved to Utah from California and there is not anything that could make me move back there. I am so in love with this state. It's clean, the people are friendly and they smile at strangers, which has me smiling at strangers. The new houses being built have had large price increase just like in every state, due to the lumber prices that have soared. I bought a great house, built in the 90's and it's lovely. The residential streets are super wide and the people on the street want to know you. I love Utah. When I was growing up in Northern California in the 70's, It had a lot of the same attributes that Utah has now, but not anymore. When I moved I felt like I was "escaping" California.

I lived in Utah for 25 years and left because it’s not the Utah it was. Almost everything you mention is the opposite pretty much. Utah’s become so overcrowded it’s gone downhill very fast, housing is not easy to find and way overpriced. I sold my home for 6 times what it was worth. Utah taxes everything, if they could tax the air you breathe they would.

I’ve lived in Utah my whole life and grew up in West Valley and currently live in Murray. My condo I bought in 2016 was $97, 000. Now it’s tripled. Even in places like Tooele and Grantsville that were once small towns are expensive as hell. I’m an ex Mormon but still love the state because people are nice and the state is just beautiful. Unfortunately because so many folks are moving here it’s getting crowded and the cost of living is going up. A few years ago Utah wouldn’t have a low unemployment rate if Amazon had tech companies didn’t move here. Finding a job back in 2009 after high school for me was rough. I’m glad to see Utah grow but it’s happening a bit too fast.

Also…the housing prices you mentioned as the “median” being $350k…you can’t find a house for that little. Maybe a condo or a townhouse, but not a single family dwelling. You $500k figure was more accurate.

And rent for $1200? Maybe a studio apartment. But anything bigger you’re looking at $1500-$1800 for a 1-2 bedroom. Renting a house? $2000-$2500/mo easy. Just renting a bedroom in an existing house is $700 with roommates or more.

I am neither american nor mormon, but I am very impressed about the people in Utah and what they have achieved!

Used to be a lower cost of living. Everything including housing has sky rocked from what it used to be.
