We use a simple PENTATONIC HAND GRIP to extract all the 7 modes, we mix MINOR & MAJOR, we play POLY MODAL and we just go totally CRAZY by the end of this tutorial. Some parts of this Jazz lesson are old stuff that we need to brush up on - other parts are brand new...

Hi dear fellow musicians :) In this other lesson we do some useful practical 'exercises' with the pentatonic hand grip. You might wanna check it out when having done the lesson above...

Oliver, not only are you a great teacher, but your wonderful humanity comes through in your videos as strongly as your musical genius. My only regret is that I can't meet you in person and shake your hand. Thank you.

The last three days I've been trying this. I felt uncomfortable with it. I remembered the wise words: If you leave your comfort zone a tiny bit each day and fail, get up and keep trying a little more-that's a good sign that you get better at what you are "working" on. That applies to almost everything you try to achieve.
Today I started to get into a beautiful flow state and tried your suggestions on the pieces Mercy Mercy Mercy, Footprints, a minor blues progression and a piece of my own. For only having tried your method for only four days it worked increadably well. This is really exiting and beautiful and I can't wait to exploit this futher. It's a further step to step out of my bounderies-and it's only the beginning of a road to more freedom and inner peace. It's very close to walking a spiritual path.
Thankyou soooo much.
Love and peace

Many of my piano students are learning how to improvise with "the handgrip-method." Very enriching stuff. I'm happy to be a patron member.

Thank you for this. It is both explaining a type of logic and at the same time freeing the thought of continuous repetition. This gives structure and at the same time permission to expand beyond the norm. This is Jazz for me. To experience the complexity and appreciate the virtuosity coming from a kind, compassionate, rational, voice and the very meaning full hand gestures completely captured me. Thank you for sharing this. I'm so glad to have found you and look forward to exploring more of your insights.
