cuddles and meows in an alternate reality

As it does in humans, ear skin grows outwards. Weekly ear cleaning of the visible ear will help it clear up. And always call your vet if you are concerned!

As someone who works at a veterinary clinic, 95% of the time it's usually an ear infection that needs medication or allergies. If it is earmites, it's usually both ears and they will have a distinct grainy black substance.

But yeah, please don’t use q tips, try a pet safe ear cleaner.

Right! AND, you can use cotton cosmetic pads to clean up the outer part: they are perfect, convenient, inexpensive, disposable, and biodegradable.

I’m a vet tech, and honestly we rarely ever see cases of ear mites. Most common cause of ears being dirty is because of an ear infection. A lot of animals get frequent ear infections due to allergies.

Most of time ear infections are yeast. It’s best not to do treatments like this at home. Especially if you are wrong, resulting in the dog sitting in discomfort for longer and the infection growing more severe. It also isn’t recommended to over clean ears unless it is a dog with known issues (dogs in constant water needing vinegar/water wash for example), most of the time if you need to constantly clean ears (without infection) it’s allergies, internal or external. Constant cleaning of ears can also mess with natural microbes on the skin and exasperate the situation. My dogs don’t get their ears cleaned as they are perfectly clean on their own, if you constantly find gunk you may want to bring it up to your vet at a yearly. Some breeds are predisposed to such issues such as floopy eared water dogs and frenchies who have all the issues 😂

Kennel tech here. Ear mites are usually a cat problem. The vast majority of ear infections in dogs are either yeast or bacteria, though it is sometimes mites. Your best bet is a more general ear cleaner and if the dog seems to have an ear infection, just go to your vet and they can figure out what the issue is. They'll make sure get the right stuff (either a medicated ear cleaner or antibiotics) to clear up the infection

THAT 1% OF EAR MITES:
WHEN YOU HAVE A GOOD DAY

Issue 1: Ear mites aren't contagious to people
Issue 2: It's very unlikely for your pet to develop them from impactions alone, and it you keep your pet on a veterinary approved Flea and Tick a majority of those can treat/prevent ear mites. It's more common in your outdoor cats not dogs.
Issue 3: The itch is likely an infection if you see an itch or dark debris in the ear. Consult your vet for approved ear washes and possible treatment for the ear infection and getting to the root cause of why your pet is experiences them.
Issue 4: DON'T put anything in your pets ears without speaking with your vet. If your pet does have a severe infection or ear mite for long enough there can be damage to the ear drum and you don't want to put random snake oil from the internet in that ear.

Good information in this video that we can agree on. Never use swabs, and they do indeed have L shaped ear canals.

It's not always ear mites though. So remember not to instantly rule it off as ear mites if your pets ears are constantly itchy. We spent months trying to cure it thinking it was ear mites before finding out later it was a yeast infection. Make sure to get your pets checked out.
