As an earcannal, I confirm this is not pleasant.

Let's be honest. Once the Q-tip gets in your ear, it feels like heaven 🥲

So, I did this once as a teenager. I put it in my ear and then forgot about it and went and laid down, shoving it all the way into my head. Destroyed over 80% of my eardrum and had to have surgery 9 months later where they sewed a skin graft onto what was left, making me a new eardrum. I was insanely lucky because after everything healed I got 95% of my hearing back. They were estimating I’d only get back 50-80%.

Fun facts about not having an eardrum: you can still hear if the ear bones aren’t damaged, but it’s like listening to earbuds at the lowest volume. Also, you can’t be near water at all because if water gets in your exposed inner ear you will get an ear infection from hell. I had to have a custom molded silicone earplug made by an audiologist just to be able to shower safely. (The worst part was I was a competitive swimmer at the time, and this effectively ended my swimming career as I had to miss two seasons in a row and lost all the muscle toning I had for swimming as a result.) The most annoying part was that due to my ear not being used to the surgically reconstructed eardrum, the pressure on both sides couldn’t equalize, so for about three months I heard the sound and felt tiny puffs of air rushing in and out of my ear, driving me half insane. Lastly, because the eardrum is only 3 skin cells thick, when it was surgically reconstructed it vibrated differently while it was healing, so certain frequencies would make my eardrum vibrate painfully. Not a good thing for someone who was in band at the time like I was. I had to wear said aforementioned earplug to every band practice for 6 months after the surgery.

It’s now been 8 years since the surgery, everything healed perfectly and I can hear just fine without issues, but take these words of advice; DONT PUT Q-TIPS IN YOUR EARS!!!

Edit: for people asking me how I forgot I had a q-tip in my ear, I both have adhd and was a dumb teenager who didn’t pay attention to things. Also, thanks for all the likes. Never got this many before.

There are tools you can find at any pharmacy place that had a small scoop on one end and on the other end, you can turn it to pick up loose earwax, that's great for keeping your ears clean. It requires gentle use because of the sensitive material and same with Q-tips, aren't meant to go past a certain point in the ear. But they work well. And can help you scratch your ears too!
