The debate about artificial sweeteners is ongoing, with many believing that artificially sweetened products, like diet sodas, are generally detrimental to health. Although the science currently shows an interesting lack of human data on artificial sweeteners behind dangerous for health, another point of contention is its potential effects on a key fitness factor: weight loss.

A new study looks into the weight loss effects of artificially sweetened beverages like diet sodas and how it compares to not sweetened beverages, but the most vital beverage of all, water. Can diet sodas actually help you lose MORE weight than water alone?

I drink diet soda occasionally, but using it as a replacement for water I'm sure would be unhealthy in other ways, not including weight

I'm so happy that funding and conflicts of interest came up!! This should be talked about more when it comes to studies

I will say this about diet sodas and diet carbonated drinks though - carbonated water helps a ton during a cut, I think because the carbonation 'tricks' you into feeling full. For those that are currently on a cut, try drinking carbonated water with your meals. It will help

When I decided to get healthier and started dieting and exercising around two years ago I cut out regular soda completely. I started drinking a lot more water, but since I can't stand tea or coffee, I still drink diet/zero calorie soda. I'd lost about 100 lbs at my lightest, so it seems to be working for me. I kind of slacked off a little the last few months, so I gained a little weight back (about 10 - 15 lbs., or so), so I've refocused again and trying to loose a bit more (say another 25 lbs.) and then see where I'm at. But I can happily say that I've still not gone back to regular soda, and haven't touched the stuff since I started this whole process. Not even sure I could go back to it at this point, as I think I'd find it far too sweet.

i mean youd definitely want to drink water if you can just because it's always going to be the #1 option in safety and cleanliness - but diet soda is really, really tasty and gives you a slightly fuller feeling because of the carbonation. if you're picking between normal soda and diet, it's a no-brainer. they taste identical and diet has 0 calories, which is what really matters in weight loss

I only consume diet soda when I'm craving one. Guess I'll still stick to water as my go-to drink.

Nice findings on the conflicts of interest! Well done! Also, never had Horchata without sugar, interesting.

Would love to see a video talking about other types of water, such as sparkling, alkaline, mineral, etc. Thanks for all your time and research!

It wouldn't surprise me if the increased weight loss is from participants having their soda cravings satisfied vs the water drinking participants secretly drinking sugary soda sometimes

Funny how people are willing to question science on this kind of topics but not so many other industry-funded / ideologically-based studies.

Lol @ "Mexican horchata." 😂 I thought you were going to say Mexican coke.

I'm inclined to take the study positively since I've switched to zero sugar drinks and I can really see and feel the difference.

Greg Doucette mentioned a study similar to this but did talk about the funders behind it

Aren't there plenty of studies showing that sweeteners affect your gut microbes negatively and your sensibility to sweets? I'm very skeptical about the study, also I'd be curious to see the body composition changes, because if you're drinking zero cal soda but dehydrated and lost muscle your total weight might even be lower than drinking water but it's not a good sign

4:28 Horchata is Spanish, not Mexican. So are Churros, btw. In both cases the Spanish version is way superior to the Latin-American version and this is coming from a Latin-American.

Before a workout, I just take coffee. If I fancy some flavored water, but don't want the caffeine, there is plenty of tea options.

As much as I enjoy the occasional -diet- _"zero sugar"_ soda, I think if I wanted to take my weight loss seriously I'd stick with water.

…and black coffee. ☕
