Diet Sodas: Do They Hurt Heart Health?

Last week, research out of the American Stroke Association's International Stroke Conference pointed a potentially incriminating finger at diet sodas -- suggesting that people who drink them daily may dramatically up their risk for vascular events like heart attack and stroke, compared to folks who don't drink them at all.

But don't set down the fizzy stuff just yet -- while interesting, the findings don't definitively prove cause an effect -- only an association. We talked to cardiologist Dr. John Bisognano to learn what other factors might be at play behind the scenes.

Just curious could these numbers be a bit misrepresented? I say this because most people (at least that I know) only drink diet pops because they're overweight or unhealthy. That being said, is it probable that these people were already at a high risk level for the problems you have mentioned well before they started drinking diet pop?

Hey there Doc.
I would like to hear if you have made a video on someone who eats a regular diet along with diet sodas.
Are they better for me than Regular Coke and regular Pepsi just by what is in them?

IMHO: it all boils down to stress, healthy and bad, and what role the soda plays in your life.

The problems even worse when you eat unhealthy food or have several sodas/diet sodas per day.

As a person who is one of the 1% out there who actually has zero issue with diet soda, and a BUNCH of issues with sugared sodas... and sugard things in general... i can say that this study is grossly misrepresenting the issue.... also... just fyi, it was made 15 years ago... so im sure that pleanty of new research has been done since... take it as you will.

PS. diet coke has been helping me lose weight and get off of other adictive chems for the last few years, til now when i have gone from 3 pack of cigs a day and being almost 400 lbs to no when i am not smoking at all, and am down to 260lbs... it has helped me, and im sure there are pleanty of people out there who it has helped just as much.

Please, do your own research, and make your own oppinions. do not let the talking head in the sky tell you what is what

Did they take into account life factors ? Thats always the question. I hear diet soda is bad from health nuts but idk atm. Prob ok for weight loss but health and weight can be separate things when u have ur weight at a healthy range.

Actually this is somewhat false. There are numerous long term studies that show long term diet soda drinkers tend to have higher risks for heart attack or stroke and they tend to be larger. Now there is nothing in diet soda that seem to suggest it would cause any of these problems. So it may be food choices but it’s far better to simply drink water or natural tea or coffee vs drinking artificial soda.

He claims that he's a doctor or a professor I'm not ether one of those but what I do know what he dose not know is yes for some people not all who live off of diet soda is gonna have a stroke or a heart attack. What he didn't mention as a doctor that it's really all have to do with caffeine in the soda now every one knows that too much caffeine may kill some people plus it depends on your health condition . And as for diet soda it's really good for diabetics but don't believe diet soda is gonna make you more hungry it's all in the mind cause after you finish a meal and wash it down with a diet soda.Once your full and control your mind for not having any other cravings you'll be fine.

I was diagnosed with diabetes at age 11. Before that I was healthy drinking regular soda. I've had diet soda for 6 years then suddenly age 17 developed peripheral arterial disease in the legs. I am now age 37 and can hardly walk a few blocks without feeling lower leg pain after walking a few blocks. Thank you diet soda for ruining my life.
