How Return of the Jedi Was Supposed to End - Star Wars Explained

In today's episode of Star Wars Theory, we'll examine the original script of Star Wars The Return of the Jedi, and how Luke Skywalker was really supposed to turn into Darth Vader after Palpatine's death on the Death Star 2. What do you think about this? How would this line up episode 7 and 8? Star Wars The Force Awakens would be quite different...Maybe this is a slight congruent path Star Wars is taking for Star Wars The Last Jedi, with a darker more ominous Luke Skywalker. Maybe Rey will become a grey Jedi? Maybe there aren't anymore Jedi or Sith. Who knows. Only time will tell!! I'm excited either way!

I never thought there was a good enough reason for luke to turn. The temptation wasn't there. This ending wouldn't have been good.

I’ve heard of a third potential ending, one in which Han Solo dies, and we see Luke mysteriously wandering off into the distance on Tatooine.

I think that ending sounds kind of stupid. What reason would Luke have to do that? Why would he put the helmet on when it's literally only there because Anakin's body was so broken? He barely knew his father and never showed any inclination of idolizing Vader. That just sounds like George Lucas wanted to be "edgy" and have a big "twist" ending that people wouldn't have expected.

Problem is, the reason no one would have expected that ending is because there's no basis for it. It just makes no sense.

I couldn’t imagine Luke as full blown dark side. Using his anger in a duel? We saw it against Vader, but he quickly stopped with his immense self-control. Besides Yoda and Obi-Wan, I feel Luke, on a case-by-case basis, has had one of the best track records of resisting the dark side in the canon universe. Even Mace Windu channeled the dark side more than Luke did.

This seems really weird to me. Lucas has always loved kids. Why would he ever have written a script like that? Did someone else write that? Also, would that not have been a dumb ending? For Luke to not turn, then see his father stand up for him out of love, only to say, "NOW I want to be completely evil!" Makes no sense.

I remember a video once saying that Return of the Jedi was originally planned to go differently, but never THIS differently.
