A Certain Point of View. In Return of the Jedi, Obi-Wan Kenobi tells Luke Skywalker "what I told you was true, from a certain point of view. You're going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view."
Obi-Wan explains the truth about Anakin Skywalker being Darth Vader.

My favorite scene from all movies is how ghost get tired and sit on the log

In fairness to Obi-Wan, it is somewhat awkward to tell someone their father killed innocent kids and became a murdering psychopath the very first day you meet them. The body of Luke's father was still living but his father's soul had been destroyed. Had Obi-Wan and Luke known each other longer than a couple of days I think he would have eventually told him the truth. But you don't tell somebody something like that the very first day you meet them.

I love that George wasn't afraid to show that the Jedi weren't all-good and all knowing. If Luke had followed Obi-Wan's advice here and killed Vader, he'd have fallen to the dark side, and Palpatine's victory would have been permanent.

Like Anakin, Luke embraces his feelings instead of suppressing them, but unlike Anakin, Luke's idea of love is unconditional and pure, rather than selfish and possessive - and that's why he wins.

“You told me vader betrayed and murdered my father”
“That’s literally what he told me, luke.”

It is crazy how Luke never gives up on his father. Even Obi-Wan is resigned that Anakin is truly gone and only Vader remains, yet Luke still has hope. He is HOPE.

Fun fact: Alec Guinness filmed his cameo in just one day.

Leia: "Somehow I've always known..."
Luke: "And yet you played tonsil hockey with me anyway?!!"

Fun fact: This scene is actually the first time anyone mentions the name “Anakin” onscreen.

For a guy who called the entire Star Wars series "fairytale rubbish", Alec Guinness was still probably the best actor in the original trilogy.

0:39 I love how if you look closely at Luke's face, you can actually see a flicker of some residual anger/resentment in his expression at Obi-Wan for not telling him the truth right away before he quickly suppresses it. That's such a great indicator of the self-control he eventually displays when he overcomes his anger and rejects the Dark Side in the final Throne Room battle. Mark Hamill's acting in these films is seriously underrated

The acting ability of Mark Hamill is really shown in this scene. The subtle head tilt as he says 'a certain point of view?' it conveys everything Luke is feeling, yet he's restraining himself as Ben means a lot to him

Love how in the beginning of the scene, the angry Luke called him “Obi-wan” but once he explained about Anakin, Luke calmed down and called him “Ben” again.

"Bury your feelings deep down, Luke. They do you credit, but they could be made to serve the Emperor."
It's obvious that Obi-Wan was thinking of Anakin when he said this.

This scene confirms that the ''other'' is Leia, not Rey.

After watching Kenobi, you can REALLY see why Obi-Wan felt no sense of hope for Anakin. I mean, the prequels explained it well enough already but Kenobi really just really hit it home.

You know, without the prequels as a guide, Alec Guinness really pulled this scene off well. He makes it seem like these are things he hasn't wanted to think about in a very long time which is one reason he was so willing to "lie" about it to Luke. To him, it's not a "lie"... it's the truth "from a certain point of view", namely HIS point of view. He's invented this narrative to cope with what happened. There's pain and disappointment here that is palpable. A couple times he's just staring off in the distance as though memories are coming back. Really well done because if you think about it, Guinness has no idea what the backstory is.

He did an equally great job in ANH when he's telling Luke about Vader and the Jedi.

2:23 The moment everyone realized Leia and Luke’s kiss in Empire Strikes Back was sweet home Alabama
