Born and raised in New Mexico let me give you a little bit of a tip the locals don't really like Santa Fe tourists took over and it's their fault that the housing market went up it's mostly overrated. Next time you visit New Mexico visit small towns that does not include Taos it's just as worse, visit small towns with people with big hearts travel the Backroads and there you'll find the True Heart of New Mexico loving people and good food.

Wow I moved to Santa Fe when I was 12. I came from a reservation, and moving to the city well it took some time to adjust. The kind people made it easy. I live on the South side it's not bad at all.

The very innovative and world renowned Santa Fe Opera has become a cultural icon which draws an International audience during the Summer season. Hats off to Santa Fe!

While not a natives we have lived in SF for 15 years. Not mentioned is we have some of the cleanest air in the country due to lack of industry. It's the most healthy climate in the country.
I have seen only one rattle snake and he was just cruising thru the yard, lots of harmless snakes which are healthy for the environment.
The highest temps are in the low 90's and that's only a couple months of the year, compared to Phoenix which gets to 115. We have a great ski resort about 20 minutes from downtown. How many other cities can say that.
Schools are not great but we are retired so it doesn't affect us.
We have no race problems to speak of. Hopefully people will pick up the negative stuff and stay away, already Californians are moving here. We could live anywhere but love it here.

Californians and Texans are moving and purchasing multiple property’s that’s why the cost of living is going up

Lived there for several years; enjoyed it mostly. I would add to this list: if you are someone who expects professional service and/or business to happen promptly, Santa Fe is not for you. The attitude among most locals is too laidback and no one seems to have a sense of urgency to solve problems. The good side of this is that it’s a very relaxed atmosphere.

Most of the bad drivers in Santa Fe, btw, are tourists who meander down the road because don't know where tf they're going!

If you move to Santa Fe, please learn about our culture. Santa Fe is a beautiful and safe place, but the problems arise when people from other places move here. Yes, housing is expensive, that is because of housing shortage, high demand/ high prices. So when you move here, you make housing more expensive and kick a local out because they can’t afford to live here anymore. We have many problems, we are friendly, we welcome everyone to visit; just please don’t moving here until we fix our housing situation.

In the 1980s retirees from California discovered that Santa Fe had low housing prices and started moving there and driving the real estate prices up. Because of this a lot of people who work in Santa Fe commute from Rio Rancho which is now the third largest city in New Mexico after Albuquerque and Las Cruces. This includes the Santa Fe police chief and quite a few police officers who are allowed to commute in their police cars as an incentive to be Santa Fe cops.

In terms of capital cities, Santa Fe is the highest elevated capital city in the USA.

Here you go. I hope this saves someone 10 minutes and 43 seconds of their life:

10. Bad/Drunk Divers
9. Hot and Sunny so wear sunscreen and stay hydrated.
8. Dusty
7. High crime
6. Desert creatures that can be harmful, have screens on your doors.
5. High Cost-of-Living
4. High elevation
3. Sunny so wear sunscreen and stay hydrated.
2. Culture shock - it is different from wherever you came from.
1. Politics - the locals don't like their politicians.

Santa Fe, NM is a nice place to visit. Lots of museums, good food, culture. It is the oldest US State Capital, it was founded during Shakespeare's time.

Let me guess before I even watch this.
1. No substantial jobs
2. High costs of housing
3. Merchandise is overpriced
4. Winters are cold
5. Altitude
6. Attitude
7. Too many tourists
8. Too small for a Capitol city
9. Political dissent depending on your stance.
10. Roads are bad
11. Overpriced restaurants.
12. Bad parking or parking is few and far between.

Hopefully I hit some.

I like it there though, the weather is awesome. The scenery is hard to beat. Had a great time there in the fall of 18. Like it better than Sedona, AZ

One possible reason for the housing prices is the Los Alamos National Lab. The lab is located in Los Alamos county which ranks in top 5 in US for average income. Los Alamos is located less than an hour away from Santa Fe. Since Los Alamos has a housing shortage people working at the lab end up moving to Santa Fe and hence driving up the housing prices.

I spent a week there and it was great. I was on vacation so its not the same as being a local. I think its pricey because the weather is nice and its a beautiful area. I am sure many poeple from out of state push the prices up.
