Stop Counting Protein, Fat, & Carbs on a Plant Based Diet

Counting macronutrients has become exceedingly popular...but it shouldn't be. Macronutrients see foods as protein, fats, or carbs. WE see foods as whole foods categorized by their whole nature such as starch, fruit, and legumes. This macronutrient way of thinking causes people to demonize carbs as the main cause for weight gain and protein as the weight loss hero, which is not the correct way to look at the problem. Watch my PlantRant to hear how we address this issue and how simple it can be to eat a healthy diet without worrying about "macronutrients."

When someone asks me where I get my protein from I answer, the same place the animals get theirs from...the plants!!! I also ask if they know how much protein humans require? No one has been able to answer that yet. So, I let them know how much and that most Americans, including vegans get TOO MUCH!!! Notice how many dialysis centers there are around? Too much protein is HARD on the kidneys.

I’m 6 foot 200 LBs, lift 3 days a week, throw the kettle bell 100 times daily, yet people still ask me about my “lack of protein” as if I’m wasting away before their eyes

I was vegetarian for 15 years, vegan for 6 of those years, but I didn’t know how to cook and didn’t know much about nutrition so I went back to dairy, fish and fowl thinking I need protein! Now I’m WFPB vegan, feel armed with great recipes and techniques from WYW and a couple of other guys on YT and know this is right and don’t give a darn about protein! So full and so fulfilled, and so thankful for Dillon and others for sharing! thanks Dillon!!💚☮️🦋🌎🌱

My life is too busy as it is. I do not want to count macros, calories, or chase nutrients. I got better things to do with my time and energy.

I like keeping it simple. Your recipes help me do that. Keep doing what you're doing. It makes keeping this lifestyle substantial.

Hugs 🤗 from Canada 🇨🇦 ❤️

THANK YOU. Over on Fitness/Weight Loss TikTok, it’s protein protein protein. And I’ll admit….they got ‘in’ a little bit & I was cussing at myself for not getting in over 100gr of protein…I mean, why??? I’m coming back ‘home’ & needed to hear this.

I'm so glad someone talked about this. I see so many people (especially vegans) spreading bs about you have to worry about getting enough protien and fat and certain micronutrients online as well as advertising protien supplements and multivitamins. I always try to spread the truth in the comments, but I don't think most people care to give my words a second thought.

So nice that you did this! Yes, I agree…the protein craze is making everyone both in and out of the Plant based/ Vegan world nuts! It’s a very new phenomenon by the way. My grandmother never once asked herself if she was getting enough protein. Nor did my dad. The protein bar marketing schemes (with an emphasis on protein) are a major reason this is happening. Maybe 10 years ago at best? I loved the food density chart! Bravo! ❤😎⭐️🥇🏆

I got asked a couple of days ago, where do you get your protein? I told them I don’t worry about it, they looked at me like I was crazy. Told me I needed it for strong bones.

I agree 100%. There's plenty of protein in a healthy, well balanced _whole food_ plant based diet! But people should really pay attention to the part about getting adequate Calories. If you've just switched to a plant based diet and you are losing weight, then you're on a caloric deficit. This can be a good thing until your BMI starts getting really low. You may need to calculate Calories to ensure you're actually getting enough for weight maintenance. And if you're low in Caloric intake, then this might mean protein intake too.

As mentioned, whole grains, legumes, nuts & seeds are excellent protein sources. But I've seen people who load up on bananas. Like a ridiculous amount. 2000 Cal of bananas = 24.5 g protein. And that's 2000 Cal! So you could mess things up if you adopt some sort of unbalanced, faddish approach. Or if you don't even eat enough Calories. Or just start eating a bunch of processed vegan junk and you might find that your protein intake really is below the recommended levels.

This is so great info! Have been on plant based for over a month and I can say this is true. I was worried at first if I'm lack of protein. But after a while, I didn't see much weight change or any health issues. Instead I feel much more energetic and motivated during the day. So I don't worry about counting nutrients anymore. Thanks for sharing!

LOL@ the potato peel thing--I like the peels so if they're not too blemished or jacked up, I always include them. But if my potato looks sus, I'm peeling that sucker. Ain't nothin in that peel that isn't also in the potato

Thank you ❣️ You are one more source of good information in my research to side step diabetes. (Just got warned by my doctor) I have found books by four different doctors now advocating starches, veggies and fruits. Been doing this for a month now and the pounds are just sliding off!!!
