I am so happy to see this kind of video... So many people these days are promoting 24 hour... to 72 hour fasting... eating and then fasting... but I feel it is not the way to lose weight or heal much in the body...  Might be better than no fasting at all, but I find the first three or four days are near impossible to get through... so why eat and start all over again?... It makes no sense to me.

The body can also run on fat which is the most efficient fuel. The ketogenic diet trains your body to burn fat in the absence of glucose, the liver converts the small amount of glucose needed for the brain and the ketogenic diet is also protein sparing. I would love to come down though and go through the water only fast with Loren, I need the rest! But I will be totally KETO adapted hopefully protecting my muscle as much as possible.

Thanks Loren, do you know if there is a way to minimize the window of muscle consumption that your body goes through during the gluconeogensis process? For example, does changing your diet to a ketogenic one ahead of the fast help, or is one still going through this before they're able to get into a ketogenic state?

I was also falsely under the assumption that if you put your muscles through stress during fasting that your body will think it is going through an ordeal in which it needs to retain muscle mass, so thank you for dispelling that myth.

Mother has skin hives due to consuming Montekulast for over 5 years for Asthma, which then changed to Allegra 120 mg since last year .She also has hypothyroid for which she consumes Thyroxine tablets .She has eye issues. She is mostly vegan but will consume curd when she gets the option. She eats an Indian white rice & low oil curry/ mustard sauce (homemade) dish . She is horribly dismissive of water fasting & shouts at me whenever I try my water fasts.
I did a semi juice cleanse for her in last year & got her out of her Asthma inhalers, osteoporosis medicines, Pregabalin capsules for neuro issues. After the juice cleanse for 2 weeks, she straight went into her cooked diet . She is not doing so well now. Refuses to listen to me .So what should be my approach now?
I have personally done Juice fasts, water fasts(max 7 days), coconut water fasts, fruits diet(no fast) for a month & healed most of my problems including apendicitis, acid reflux, back pain, hemorrhoids, low energy, etc. So, I know the solution lies in water fasting. But how do I start with her. She doesn't understand English. So, I can't get her to watch these videos. I have been thinking of doing an extended water fast & record everything so as to ease her fears.

Growth hormone is secreted during fasting, and I've seen in many studies that growth hormone protects muscle from breaking down.
So, from an evolutionary perspective, how would an animal survive if when he fast, his body breaks down his muscles ? We store fat from food but we when abstain from food we break down muscle ? That doesn't make sense..
Also according to what you said, if someone fasts long enough, his body will transform into a giant ball of fat because his body broke all of his muscles ?? !!

So Loren, any chance at getting an answer on whether or not fasting could remove plaque from the arteries? If so, how long would that take before it actually starts to happen- 3 days plus etc. I've asked many times prior, just not sure if you see the questions or not. I would really like your insight on this. Thanks.

Loren how come I feel more energized when I do exercises during water/dry fast. i dont have your awsome knowledge but its better to do exercise during fasts than doing nothing and rest imo.

Hi loran

What if u continued light excersise during the fast — would the body keep muscle??? And go into ketosis quicker?

"your brain needs sugar". Hi again Loren. A short question this time. Do you think the extent to which someone is able to maintain some kind of meditative state, and therefore thinking much less, can play a role in the amount of muscle burning happening during ketosis. ? Or are a lot of the brain's processes to do with subconscious maintenance of the organs, nervous system etc.

I am trying to understand something. Did you say that after initial 8-12 hours, during gluconeogenesis, body uses Muscles??

He makes it sound like all the water lost at the beginning is from muscles, when that simply isn't true. It's primarily from the glycogen bound water in our muscles, and then of course some from your muscles after about 1 day. The burning of protein from muscles slows down quickly though, and from there on 6-10x as much energy is burned from bodyfat. Even more if you lift weights, which will help prevent muscle loss during a fast or low calorie diet. Not sure why he's claiming your body holds on to muscle glycogen for a while. That's not true. Your body sheds its glycogen reserves quickly, from the muscles first, not the liver first. Plenty of misinformation in this video.

You're spot on except one thing: muscles. I've been doing Alternate Day Fasting for 4 weeks, fasting for 36 hours upon end with heavy training sessions. Yet, my muscles doesn't seem to have shrunken and better yet, my performance has increased significally.

Don't know if it's the fact that I eat a lot of carbs and protein on my eating days, or it's simply stupid to use muscle directly.

Would it be bad to work out while water fasting?

This is not accurate. Research has proven different processes the body goes through to preserve muscle
