Linux Mint updater has a kernel updater utility built in too. You can download the same kernel as the latest Ubuntu release via that.

One thing to look at for the LTS version of Ubuntu MATE. It's only supported for 3 years instead of 5. While Linux Mint is supported for 5 and it has more recent versions of MATE. So if you are someone who only usually uses LTS then Mint is the better option. I am aware that Ubuntu MATE's core ubuntu packages have 5 year support but the MATE stuff only has 3 which would most likely cause breakage if continued to run past the 3 year mark.

Suggestion : The number 1 listed distro on Distrowatch is MX-Linux.
Did you know MX Linux doesn't use systemd?
Your challenge, should you accept it, is to tell the people what systemd is and why it's significant and who wrote it and why it's in c++ not ansii-c and why Leonart Poetering is seen by Redhat as some kind of divine being?
Starting point, Linux traditionally has some guiding principles, that go back to UNIX and Richie and Kernigan, and systemd flies completely 180 degrees in the face of at least half those guiding principles... it is an exact contradiction of them.

Ubuntu mate is much more polished and better than Linux mint mate . I have tested in on real hardware. RAM usage of Linux mint on older hardware is much more compared to Ubuntu Mate.

Mint should package the ayatana app indicators and mate-tweak out of the box.
