As a complete Newbie to Linux. Linux Mint is more helpful and a little less confusing. The Welcome screen helps so much having all of the main settings in one place (For a newbie)

As Mate distros go, I do prefer Ubuntu Mate. Once it is installed, I simply remove the bottom panel, and move the top panel to the bottom. Being an old-school Windows 2000/XP kind of guy, that give me pretty much the look I'm going for.

Hello Tom, after your review on Peppermint, i am happily using it, since then! Before that i tried Ububtu, Mint, Elementary OS, Bhodi, Mandjaro, Antergos and none were as good as Peppermint. Keep the good content coming!

Actually, Ubuntu Mate defaults to 2 panels, because it was a replacement for GNOME 2.

Caja is the Spanish word for box and is actually pronounced "caha" thus rhymes with the word baja, as in Baja California.

I've been using Mint for the last 10 or so years since v9 and haven't looked for anything else. Recently tried Ubuntu Mate 20.04 on a spare laptop.... Just could not bond with it and poped the Mint 19.3 disk back in after a day. Well, Nothing looks better out of the box than Linux Mint. Polished and stable. From video editing and iNav/Librepilot GCS for drone setups to Arduino coding and gaming... I still have the 18.3 x64 on my other desktop where the kids give it a really good workout in MInecraft and Alien arena, solid as a rock, and the thing is nearly 10 years The thing just works!!!!

Network Admin here.... As long as the distro will install Mate, I'm happy. Currently, I'm running Manjaro Mate. Between Mint and Ubuntu, I like Mint's setup better. I like it because of it's Windows 2000 type layout. I'm just Old School. :)

On linux mint mate, you can simply right click on a panel -> properties, then adjust it. it's not that hard, it's a one time config after installation.

I have two Dell Latitude E7440 laptops, one has Ubuntu Mate and the other Linux Mint Mate. They are quite similar, in my experience. I been using both for months, and I have a slight preference for the Ubuntu Mate. ( watching from it now ) However, my Linux Mint Mate laptop is what usually goes with me to the coffee shop. I have had some oddities from time to time with the Ubuntu Mate. For one, the Sudoku App has some strange artifacts on resize at times. Every once in a while, I have had the GUI just stop responding, and it requires a power off, but I suspect that I have over loaded the memory and run out of swap space when that happens. I have also installed Ubuntu Mate on my big desktop machine, and it has the Network Manager Icon displayed twice, and from everything I can tell, it is only detecting one WiFi device, but giving me the same icon and controls twice. It has its quirks, but it is still much more stable than Windows!

In my opinion stability is better than customization

Thanks for posting the video. I currently am using both Linux Mint Mate 17.3 Rosa 64-bit and UBUNTU Mate 16.04 running as virtual computers because the MATE versions require less resources than the standard versions.

The standard Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa 64-bit stressed out my video card.

I don't understand why all of the Ubuntu spins don't use the upon to software Center. It would give them a reason to optimize it for each spin.

Linux mint should offer different layouts like Ubuntu mate. Atleast the Redmond and the Cupertino ones.

Solus Mate is pretty awesome too, it's the best performing Mate distro I've tried so far (on my system)

Just tried the latest 18.04.2 Ubuntu Mate and was disappointed with the bugs. Right at the first boot up after install, the panel was not working properly. Window decorations were also not working sometimes when maximized. Seems UM is going backwards. Just finished installing MX Linux 18.1 and its working very well so I think I'll stick with this one for a while.

Ubuntu MATE
I love the Contemporary layout & I always switch to that whenever I use MATE. Only thing that prevents me from using Mutiny is that the menu is full screen.
The 2 layout style on Ubuntu MATE is based on GNOME 2.

i think you missed an important thing about the setup when you were talking about it, that's the old classic ubuntu setup which was used for years before going to unity. so yea, even ubuntu 10.10 used that 2 panel GNOME 2 setup.

I always enjoy these types of comparisons, Tom... always feel free to offer them :) Ubuntu Mate was one of the first Linux distros I fell in love with... loved the way I could change it round. Unfortunately, a bit like you, I didn't like how buggy it was, and this eventually led me to move on. I do prefer to have Compiz already set up personally, but it is what it is. Again, I generally prefer the Brisk style menu (I think that's what its called anyway) and I don't much like the older style Mate menu. I'll blame that on coming over from Windows lol. My Mate of choice these days is actually Solus Mate. It gives me a 'Brisk' (?) style menu and Compiz is included up front. Thanks for the walk down memory lane :)

Why there are no comparison between memory uses?
