Linux Mint vs Ubuntu: Which one is better?

The question of Linux Mint vs Ubuntu – which one is the better Linux operating system – has been a bone of contention among users for years.
While there are numerous Linux versions available – also known as Linux distros – Ubuntu and Mint are two of the most popular as they are suitable for novice users, requiring no more knowledge of how the operating system works than you would for Windows or macOS.

The future of windows doesn't feel so bright so it feels like it's about time to get into linux. I'm still struggling to choose the distro, but I believe Mint might be the best for me. I prefer something that looks familiar.

Thank you. Your review and especially the comparison to MacOS and Windows helped me decide. I have never heard it from this point of view.

Installing USB devices, e.g. RTL-SDR, often seems to take like an act of congress in Ubuntu. If you're not highly literate with the command prompt it can be painful. And I've still haven't gotten Virtualbox to run on Ubuntu >20.04LTS. Is Mint any easier to use from those facets of operation?

I have been using and very much enjoying Ubuntu Budgie 22.04. I plan to upgrade to the next LTS version soon. I highly recommend Ubuntu Budgie!

Using Mint on a Thinkpad X1 carbon 6th gen. Still either Linux or Windows drains the battery when the PC is on Suspension. For productivity I don't miss Windows, all the hardware runs fine on Mint and also I can always use cloud Office if I need to use MS Word or Excel. | Intel core i5 8350u | 8GB RAM | 512GB SDD

I was thinking on installing ubuntu in my old desktop PC, it has HDD and 4gb ram so i was wondering if new distributions like ubunto 20.02 should be ok, or if an older distribution woulb be better for older hardware, I did some research and some people suggest Debian for older PC, i was thinkg about using it for Development and casual gaming, but the later is not essential. What distro do you recommend to isntall in older computers? thanks for the info.

I use linux mint with GNOME DE lol.
The only reason I do so, is because Mint has a better software manager, better software updater, and better apps overall.

I'd like to be loyal to Ubuntu, as I started with it many many years back when it was still quite new. When the Unity desktop came in, I swapped to Linux Mint, using the 'MATE' desktop. I've tried to use other desktops and other OSs but I always come back to mint MATE. Indeed, I tried Ubuntu MATE on my old desktop but was surprised how much slower and less user friendly it was. Linux Mint is simply a more polished and thoughtful downstream version of Ubuntu. While Mint wouldn't exist without Ubuntu (so thanks to all those using Ubuntu) but Ubuntu is commercial, has these HUGELY bloaty snap packages, is slower, and is very slightly less user friendly.

I tried mint. For me, it is good, but with no support lack of rich App Store and bugs, it's nowhere near as good as stock Ubuntu. Ubuntu is just more professional.

The LinuxMint-21.3-ISO download file is 2.85 GB and the Ubuntu-24.04-ISO download file is 5.69 GB: So shouldn't Ubuntu be better than Linux????
