Hey Guys It’s Joel!

I realised that lots of you (my viewers) are in the situation where you're considering a BMW Z4, or perhaps one of it's competitors like a Porsche Boxster S, or Honda S2000. Given this, I decided I should make a video giving my opinion on things you should consider before buying a Z4 or similar sports cars.

If you're already an owner of a Z4, or something similar, comment below if you have any other pointers for first-time buyers! Thanks for tuning in as always and any feedback + video suggestions are very welcome.

Just recently purchased my 06 Z4 3.0si, and it was in large part due to your videos like this one. Thanks for all the genuine, in-depth content Joel! Keep it up!

I do think it’s a life style choice having a Z4 I’m 54 kids gone live on my own so I’m at the stage where I need a bit of fun and a car that puts a big fat smile on my face every time I drive it, or get one before kids come along if you can afford running cost ect you can get a decent one for really not a lot of money and they are fun to drive 🤩🤩🤩👍 hope your ok Joel great vid mate 👍

Absolutely love Z4’s, I’ve been lucky to have 3 over the years (2.2auto, 2.2 manual and 3.0 manual) great cars to buy total bargain which in my opinion makes it ok when it comes to running costs. As for the tech, if you enjoy driving the tech doesn’t matter at all, personally I prefer simple tech on a car. Great vids Joel 👍

The parts are a moot point. The Z4's parts are not any more expensive than other BMWs and the Z4 is very reliable since it shares most parts with the E46 3 series - for example the DISA valve. Parts are like fuel, you have to put them in regardless of how long you keep your car. You only consider the cost of the parts to the value of the car if you intend to replace it in the near future.

The run-flats are terrible so they need to be changed. The small steering and busy tires and suspension mean it is more tiring to commute in. The ground clearance is very low so you'll be scraping stuff more often. The cabin is small so it will quickly get stuffy, especially with two bodies, if the circulation is not turned up. And yes, the equivalent 3-series got way more gadgets such as folding mirrors on reverse.

Hope you develop more patience with age. That old man will one day be you.

I was originally looking at Audi TT mk2 videos when your video popped up in my suggestions box. I’m so glad I went with the Z4! I love how low you sit in it but I would agree that the ride is very stiff. I only have the 2.5 engine and I still find it stiff. I test drove a 2.0 and they are somewhat softer but I wanted an inline 6 engine as opposed to the 4 pot 2.0l so I wasn’t bothered about the compromised ride quality. If anyone is thinking of getting a Z4 I would say to Factor in the cost of replacing the run flat tyres. A lot of people comment on how the run flats tramline and follow any imperfections in the road and that is so true!

Maintenance has to be put in perspective, either buy new at 40grand or buy old at 5grand and spend 10grand in maintenence...youre still ahead buying used.

Just grabbed a 2003 2.5i last year with 41k miles on it and love it BUT I just put in $2500 into oil gaskets drying out in 3 places, new battery, replacement mirror (flew off). So yeah its not cheap to own this car but man does it draw attention to it! Fun to drive for sure!

I have a '08 Z4M coupe and my dad has an '08 cayman, we both paid pretty much the same amount for them (mine was £500 more) and for what he got in comparison to what i got is shocking really. I have 6 gears he only has 5, his is running with roughly 240 BHP, im pushing 350 and the interior is so incredibly cheap feeling its not what i imagined from a porsche. When looking for a 2 seat, affordable sports car the only real option in my mind is the Z4 and Z4M.

Love the video mate, and the way you break it all down! I'm thinking of getting a Z4 as a weekend / holiday / non commuting car, and these videos are helpful in the decision making! Hope yours is still going strong

Bought a 2.5 two months ago after watching your videos. Still think e85 is pretty cool and less technology is OK cause im not really good at it.
Thanks joel

Tyre pressure warning system will work on any tyres :) All it does is warns you if any wheel's average rotational speed increases by a certain amount. This indicates that the rolling circumference has reduced, which will generally be because the tyre pressure has dropped.

😆nice informative video and insights Joel, as I'm one of those old people who is also an advanced driver it made me smile and laugh. I've had convertible sports cars the only issues I have are the getting in and out, It's a younger persons car, but a lot of fun if you can manage the ride and lack of comfort. Thank you Joel, bice video.

I started with a roadster and now have the Coupe. Although parts are expensive I would 100% buy another E85/E86. They are just awesome 👍

I have a daily 2.5 Z4 2005 and a Volvo XC70 2002 foor the family weekend trips.
The Volvo is very very very much mor expensive in maintenance and fuel.
I use the Z4 10000km and the Volvo (incl vacations) 4000km a year.
