Some random debt agency sent me a letter saying I owed them $25 (from a cellular company I stop using years before). I sent them a letter as a joke and asked them to settle for $1.00 I never heard from them again.

Yeah, the caller sounds sweet. Also kudos for wanting to pay back her debts.

I work in collections and if they are not contacting you anymore it is possible the debt is considered “exhausted efforts” which means they are no longer “actively” collecting unless you give them a call to pay it.

Yes, in writing. I had school loan that lapsed due to illness, went to collection. Made agreement to pay lump sum. In 24 hrs payment due went up few hundred dollars, when questioned guy was hesitant then said INTEREST! I paid just to be done with it. Burns me to this day

Record the call! Nevada is *not* a two-party consent state.
Caller can record these calls on her own, no permission needed.

I was in collections and I didnt pay it..Went to court and won ..Judges hate debt collectors...The judge even told me that I knew more than the ambulance chaser

so this guy is literally encouraging and giving tips to people who don't pay their debts on how to negotiate and screw the business owners. Dave "they will be angry because you didn't pay but you need to be tough".

Patience is key with some of these collection agencies. You may not get the best deal to resolve your debt in first call. It may take 3-4 calls before they agree to a settlement amount you can afford.

Have them validate the debt before paying a collection account!!! You can have collections removed from your credit report.

Today Dave is doing as good as he deserves

Just say thankyou to the collectors for paying it. It was bought by them from the originator. They took that risk

Most creditors aren't selling debt anymore they are holding it and pursuing and alot of hospital systems are running there own collections departments.

I had a couple things in collections I just let years go by and they fell off

If these collection agencies are so shady that they can't be trusted with handling a payment properly and as agreed upon, why even bother paying them?

I disagree 100 percent as usual. You do not owe the debt collectors, you owed the original debt to a company who already wrote the debt off.

Kentucky law states that they have to send a written notice within five days of initial contact. But I was never contacted by any of these Credit Collection companies and I have lived at the same address for eight years now and had the same phone number for 15 years, is there anyway that I can get these death removed because of this law??

BOA will settle for 25% of balance right before it "charges off" which I believe is 180 dpd.

Ha that takes me back. Granted I will be both cautious and tough when the time comes to pay off my collection debts, esp considering I likely will not know any of these agencies from Adam.

I can remember a time though when I was having to work the other side of that phone. I can gladly say that I worked at an agency that was very FDCPA compliant, no harassment or mishandling of payments. Granted it was still debt collection, but none of the horror stories that give the profession a rotten name.

Still...it was still miserable work, hated it, wanted to be working something else but had to take what I could get at the time. At least I had a few good takeaways from it : made some new friends and also met my current girlfriend (and hopefully future wife) there.

Can someone please HELP! I quit a job in 2021 and they kept paying me direct deposit. They asked for it back but I spent it so it’s gone to collections now. I honestly don’t care but wish to possibly buy a house and idk if I should just hire a credit advisor that can do all this “letter” stuff for me but THEY are wanting to charge me 1k to clean this collection up. Idk what to do???? I find it unfair since it seems to be an HR fault not mines since I quit!
