It wouldn't surprise me if the father told his wife to pay off the sons 31k if he died and the wife promised but after he died she ignored his wishes.

I was exactly $31, 000 in student loan debt for a useless degree 8 months ago. Down to $24, 000 and should be paid off in 12 months now that I have a written budget to follow.

I just payed off the last of our 32k debt only took 16 months (mostly credit cards and my wife's medical bills) and our income is only 50k a year back then. He needs to just man up and take care of HIS debt.

Oh God yes! I know exactly how that feels. I was in that position once. Afterwards I learnt that when it comes to my friends and my family, simple rule to follow with money; "MY" problem is not "YOUR" problem so I won't ask you for anything and "YOUR" problem is not "MY" problem so don't ask me for anything.

These kinds of family deals need to be solved by walking away from the family members - PERMANENTLY

I feel like there must be more to the story. He should have never signed loan documents if the parents agreed to pay for school.

You can't talk to a black mom that way! You will be picking up your face from the floor!

I'm wondering if the parents meant if he moves out and gets married he's responsible for all of his college and the son and her misunderstood it.

Didn't she say at the beginning "if he moves out or gets married he would be responsible for the loan?" Witch he did do.
