at my school in Australia teachers aren't allowed to keep us after school for detention or anything without parental permission but they give us lunchtime detentions all the time

Back when I was in high school, after-school detentions were extremely rare. The reason why? We had a really bad public transport system, and the latest buses picked students up by 4pm. If you were kept in past 4pm and you lived more than 10km away from the school grounds your parents needed to be contacted to pick you up, and the teachers hated dealing with inconvenienced parents - thus most teachers would just schedule the detention for the next day to avoid any confrontation.

When I was in high school they gave you lunch detention for being late too much. I got lunch detention and I decided I'd skip it to talk with my friends. They called me to the office to give me ISS for a day for missing lunch detention along with an addition 2 weeks of lunch detention. I skipped those as well and I ended up being in ISS many times throughout the year. I racked up an entire quarter's worth of lunch detention until they finally stopped bothering me as I consistently never showed up.
