Biggest Reason People Get Gout

Learn the biggest reason people get gout in this informative video! Uric acid is the culprit, and it is produced as a metabolic by-product of fructose (sugar) and alcohol. Drinking alcohol impairs the kidneys' ability to eliminate uric acid, while some alcohol, particularly beer, contains purines that break down into uric acid. To avoid gout, it is crucial to reduce sugar and alcohol intake. Although red meat and seafood are also high in purines, they don't raise uric acid levels as much as sugar and alcohol.

Did you know that not all sugar is created equal? Sucrose, lactose, and maltose are all simple sugars called disaccharides, but they differ in composition. For example, fructose causes seven times the amount of oxidative stress and insulin resistance compared to glucose, making it the biggest driver of these conditions. The liver converts fructose into uric acid, which inhibits nitric oxide production, leading to high blood pressure, a common comorbidity in people with gout. Moreover, too much fructose can lead to the conversion of energy into liver fat and molecules that trigger inflammation, increasing the risk of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, high triglyceride levels, and other metabolic illnesses.

In conclusion, sugar and alcohol are the two biggest reasons why people have high uric acid levels and are prone to gout. By reducing sugar and alcohol intake, you can decrease your risk of gout and other metabolic illnesses. Remember, the recommended daily intake of added sugar is 25g or less, and the average American consumes three times that amount! Take control of your health and learn how to minimize your sugar and alcohol consumption.

My late husband had gout, kidney failure, high blood pressure, and was diabetic. Until this explanation I never had any idea they were all related. Thank you!

I have had many
extremely painful gout attacks since my mid 30s. I'm 59 now. I'm otherwise
a healthy guy. No diabetes, cholesterol low,
normal blood pressure, not overweight. l
have also realized that if I allowed myself
to get rundown and dehydrated, a gout
attack would often happen. I only
occasionally drink beer.. and l've also
noticed when I do indulge in beer especially
after being on vacation in Mexico an attack
would happen as a result.. So l've learnt
that drinking plenty of water, not getting
rundown and avoid too much beer is
important in greatly reducing number of attacks..

My husband is now convinced that Alexa listens to our conversations bc we were just talking about his gout flare up when the notification for this video popped up. Lol! Good information though. We’d never heard that sugar had anything to do with gout. We thought it was just alcohol and red meat.

It's not often that I hear a doctor tell the truth about sugar and gout, they usually blame meat, kudos Dr Mike

Haven't had an outbreak since I quit drinking. Just another good reason to give up alcohol.

Isn't it amazing how this information is not only not widely known, but neither is it promoted, advertised, or otherwise being disseminated to the public, but there is all kinds of advertisement and stuff for which medications are made to "alleviate" other things? Here, the prescription for alleviation is to just stop eating and drinking some things. There's no money to be made in that's why we don't know about this information. Thank you for putting it on YouTube. I learned these things about 10 or 12 years ago and have pretty much eliminated gout flares because of it. I learned it on a website some guy made who experimented on himself with his own gout issues to see what would cause a flare and what would keep them away.

This is the only video you have to watch on the subject its short to the point and THE TRUTH. I am a renal transplant patient of 21 years, previously i experienced gout flair ups two to three times a year. I was prescribed Febuxostat which I didn't take instead I stopped taking sugar in tea and coffee and i rarely drink alcohol. I eat red meat in moderation. Next month It will be a year without a flair up I recently mentioned this to my renal consultant who said that there is no link between sugar and uric acid which clearly cant be true as its the only change I've made. Thanks Dude.

I am a gout sufferer. The biggest thing is to to keep hydrated. You can get a litre bottle for measuring your daily intake. You must drink water even in winter when you don't get the thirst reflex.
I also have cut down sugar by 90 percent.
I eat as much cheese and red meat and beer and wine as I want.
The wife eats far far too much sugar and never had gout.
I found that when I was driving long distance with a high stress load my gout would flare up.
One other thing I've given up on is canola oil. It's difficult because they put it in everything.
Read the label on any processed food.

I had a brief (2 weeks) experience with gout. I couldn't belive the pain in my right little toe. I couldn't even tolerate wearing a stocking. When I got super serious about getting control over my type 2 diabetes, it went away, never to return. I'm currently control with dirty Keto, but the low carb is the key for me, including weight loss without "dieting". In fact it's difficult for me to consume even 1300 cals a day. Eat REAL food, it's that simple!

WHY THE HELL WE HAVE TO LEARN THIS AFTER THE DAMAGE IS DONE, THIS SHOULD BE TAUGHT IN HIGH SCHOOLS ALL FOUR YEARS!!! Food industry loves ignorance in consumers.

In my experience, all my gout attacks came after spending long periods of time on my feet and not hydrating. I’ve had two gout attacks after spending time at Disneyland and not being properly hydrated. Three other attacks were after very long walks and not properly hydrating. I learned my lesson and now take electrolytes with added potassium citrate.

True story have had gout since 2008. Did some research and for the first time last year I did not get a gout attack from five attacks a year. I stopped 95% of Carbs and 95% of sugar. It was a Big sacrifice but it's better than the pain you get from gout. I do not drink often but when I do I'll drink tequila. In my opinion I think gout and insulin resistance go together. I hope I can help someone from debilitating pain that you get from gout.

Great video, doc. I just ran into this while drinking a cup of real grape juice drink, about 20 ozs of a real wine (8% alcohol!) a day and an occasional five beers a night. My legs and feet swelled up for the first time in my life. It really terrified me. The oddity here was a grossly sweet frozen cheesecake made everything come to a head. I never knew a single incident of food poisoning could cause your legs and feet to swell so bad, but it can. I stopped the sweets, dropped the wine and beer, and went on a seven day fast with no solid foods - just lots of spring water, many types of teas only sparingly sweetened with real honey and just a half cup of fruit juice if I got lightheaded. I made it the full seven days fasting with no solid food. My legs and feet went totally back to normal. My eyes got better and my brain fog, that I didn't even realize was that bad, went away. I look forward to my next seven day fast soon. And I am definitely reconsidering any more alcohol consumption at all. I never want to live with swollen legs and feet. I wished I knew this fasting and complete refusal to ingest anything sugar producing was a cure when my wife was alive. She had swollen legs the last couple of years of her life and the Lasix didn't help it at all. You are 100% correct about the alcohol and anything else full of sugar. It is really bad for you.

I've suffered for years with gout. My old dr. Was not actually helping. I now have the right care. Your description is the best I have ever heard in 18 years. Thank you. Confirmed my thoughts. I will now implement a much stricter diet. I was very sad to hear you say ice cream. That is my favorite snack. 😢

This doctor is 100% correct, I had a gout attack that lasted 2 months due to me drinking a fruit, mostly berries, smoothie every morning. Three things never to drink: Alcohol, Fruit juice and soda

Finally, someone that points the culprit of gout on fructose, alcohol and sugar in general. Not meat! Being a carnivore myself always frustrated me that so-called doctors only blamed red meat. Heck no! Thanks Dr. Hansen

Sugar is my Achilles heal for gout. Usually stay away from it, but one Starbucks ☕ can put me over the edge. I stay away and am fine
