Reason for LDL Increase for Some on a Low Carb Diet

I used to do the Atkins diet years ago. I remember Dr Adkins said that your cholesterol would go up while you were losing weight on low carb, because you were getting rid of fat stored with cholesterol. He said not to check your cholesterol until you are done loosing your weight for a few months, to give your cholesterol time to stabilize. Not to worry.

i got my results yesterday, scared the hell out of me. i was 290 in december 2023, and i have lost 90 pounds. i went to the dr yesterday to get my labs, and my LDL and cholesterol shot up. i was pissed. but after doing some research, i have found several doctors that have confirmed this statement. i lost a lot of weight and the gunk is being cleared out.

cholesterol and triglecirides are stored in our fat cells, when we stop carb intake the fat is released and we burn the triglecirides, but the cholesterol is slowly excreted with bile and fiber. that is why it shows in our bloodstream. after the weight loss, your back to normal your ldl goes back to normal.

This happened to me for a while before my weight stabilised. It can also happen when you reverse a fatty liver. My total cholesterol jumped from 5.1 to 6.5 after being on a low carb diet for 6 months, but after 9 months it dropped to 4.5, which is lower than what it is was before I started the diet.

Thank you for sharing this, I was indeed paranoid about the increase in my LDL and now taking statin to lower my LDL after losing about 30 pounds in 6 months, this now makes more sense to me since I have mostly eaten fish, vegetables and fruits while reducing my carb intake and almost no added salt or sugar. I was asking my cardiologist why this is so but she still pointed out that something was wrong with my diet.

Thanks a million for uploading this video; I lost 50lbs over the last year and when I did my annual physical I was shocked to find my LDL was higher than it was last year (HDL was also higher, which is good, and triglycerides were lower), which threw me in for a loop! I was expecting better results after one year of eating a healthy diet (imo, anyway) and losing a ton of weight. Dr. Phinney's explanation makes perfect sense and finally solved that puzzle for me; much appreciated!

I was always thin, but when i went low carb my ldl shot up and never went back down... Even after several years.

WOW THANKS. This has happened to me, with LDL going down and then increasing a lot. Even the amount of weight loss was about 30lbs and after that LDL started to go up and I've now lost a total of about 39lbs. I'm very glad that you have the biopsy information so it is not just hypothetical. I'm still carrying about 8lbs too many compared to my ideal weight before children. I've been low carb now for 21 months and was starting to get worried about the large increase in my recent blood test but now I think I'll wait until the next blood test in 6 months to see what happens to the LDL.

how much time it will take for the liver to pick up the cholesterol and eliminate it?

Hi how long on average does it take for cholesterol that has shot up to go down and really reflect weight loss and a healthier body.??

I'd like to know if the same effect would be seen with prolonged (5 day) fasting? If so, it would explain why my doctor wants to put me on statins.

I keep hearing this theory and it could be the case for some people but I suspect there is a ton more going on. For instance I recently lost weight on Keto and ADF. My cholesterol went crazy. Up to 450 from about 250. Eventually I noticed I had increased HSCRP, increased fibrinogen, increased sed rate, increased ferritin, increased CRP. All things that increase with cortisol. So dieting itself can make your body think it is under physical stress and it releases cortisol. Once I stopped dieting, everything started coming back to normal. I am guessing it is cortisol that accounts for at least 50% of this when dieting.

Had 2 stents last year, given loads of drugs including 40mg statin.
Was getting all kinds of side effects but doctor wanted to put me on 80mg statin !.
I said no way and came off statins altogether. Went plant based with meat substitute. But loads of weight.
So I have gone keto and I'm losing the weight but my doctor wants me back on statins as LDL cholesterol was increased.
Reall difficult what to do.🤔

I think I'm a lean hyperesponder what dave feldman talks of . I've lost a lot of weight and stayed on keto but my ldl is now 270 and my hdl and tryglicerides are very good . I'm also having g issues with constipation so thst mean more fat ? I didn't think I was earing that much fat well not sticks of butter for example. My ldl is the highest its been is this OK

I've been on keto for about 4 weeks now, I had my blood work done and my cholesterol came back as 321 total, 244 ldl and 63 hdl. My doctor wants to prescribe statin as well but I will not allow it. Statin's do some very bad things to the body. I have gone back and forth about why my ldl is high, This video makes sense though because I have lost about 35 lbs of fat, and have gained about 8 lbs of muscle in the last 8-9 weeks. My ketone levels are always 30-50. I think my body is just cleaning up all the crappy fast foods I was packing away for years. I think the only way to tell is to do the keto or lc diet for a year, after your body gets done burning fat and see what your markers are then. It takes time to undo years of a jacked up diet. In the interim I think I will focus more on unsaturated fats, and whole foods. This should help the natural process of cleansing the LDL from the fat cells and shrinking them. I read there was also a difference between dense LDL and fluffy LDL (which conveniently doesn't show up on a regular cholesterol test). Fluffy is supposed to be good, and maybe what this video is referring to that the LDL is just in transit to the liver for processing, not gunked up overflow from the fat cells. It might be interesting to know if at some point our fat cells cant contain anymore ldl and as it is moving around our body it solidifies and turns dense in arteries causing heart disease? I can't see how if it is just moving through the blood stream and the liver is actively filtering it that it is a bad thing. I had my thyroid checked as well, interested to see what theses results show comparatively.

Dr my cholesterol went from 229 to 363 and my tryglicerites when up too they are still in normal range but the point went up. I was thinking they would of least went down even though ldl got higher. What do i do? I want to stop keto. Been on it for almost 2 months lost 5 pounds only need to lose 6 more and just started omad.

My LDL rose to 200 (high according to test parameter) and I only lost 10 lbs. Total cholesterol 271, triglycerides low at 66, HDL 58. My purpose was not to lose weight so much but a little belly fat through mostly carnivore diet and exercise. Height 6-4 at 206 lbs and BMI is 25.1 considered slightly overweight. My doctors have commented they think I'm a little underweight. Go figure. Ha!
