Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a condition where the amount of gastric juice that refluxes into the esophagus exceeds the normal limit, causing symptoms with or without associated esophageal damage.
Esophagus is the tube-like structure that connects our oral cavity to the stomach.
At the point where the esophagus joins the stomach, there is a circular muscle band called the lower esophageal sphincter.
This sphincter acts like an automatic door to prevent gastric juice from coming into the esophagus. When a person is at rest, the door remains closed.
And when the person is eating, the door opens to permit the food particles to enter the stomach. Once food enter the stomach, the door will be closed again.
This opening and closing functions are controlled by the autonomic nervous system.
In gastroesophageal reflux disease, this function of the lower esophageal sphincter is impaired, resulting in uncontrolled gastric juice reflux into the esophagus.
The exact cause of this dysfunction is not very clear.
However, several risk factors are thought to be associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease.
Including obesity, smoking, and large meals with high fat and low fiber content.
In addition, transient relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter can be caused by foods like coffee, alcohol, chocolate, fatty meals, as well as by certain medications like beta agonists, nitrates, calcium channel blockers, and anticholinergics.
Hormones like progesterone, and substances like nicotine, also can cause relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter.
People with gastroesophageal reflux disease can include the following foods to their diet.

High fiber foods
Alkaline foods
Watery foods
Ginger
Non-citrus fruits
Lean meat and seafood

Eating red or Fuji apples is effective also in treating acid reflux. They are alkaline in nature and no side effects.Several years ago my wife and I were suffering from acid reflux and we used red and Fuji apples to treat acid reflux as recommended by a friend. It really worked and the problem never came back.

This is helpful. I do hope that us all with acid reflux get rid of it soon. I don't know about anyone else but I'm not that good at eliminating food that I love from my diet for too long. I love citrus fruit, tomatoes and I'm not looking forward to an autumn or winter without warm spicey foods. I love chilli in soups and stews. And don't even mention cheese! I love cheese 🧀 🥺

gerd is mostly a sign of low acidity in your gut. meaning you won't be able to digest proteins as well so meat consumption is probably not a good idea

Confuses me. Don't you need acid strong to digest food, so why try weaken acid?

I feel like i have something in my throat and i cant swallow my supplements. I did go to my doc and she gave me tablets for acid reflux and stomach acid reflux. The tablets took affect after 3 days with the tablets but i have to finish them within 2 and half weeks but the last two days i gotten diarrhea with an upset stomach. I wish i had something that it would work as its getting really painful and now i have pain in my back, migraines and get very tired in the afternoon. I wish there was a cure. Im a smoker and a coffee drinker and i ain't giving up them.
