The unfortunate reality is that, part of the binding process was to quite literally BREAK their feet. Shape them, and then bind them to heal into that position.
It’s a horrible practice, and is highly debilitating, as it’d cause lifelong pain from doing everyday activities such as walking.

I would never wish this on anyone, especially for the sake of “femininity” or “traditions”. This is a literal torture method.

People believed that woman with small feet were a sign of beauty and to keep women in the house. Women who refused were considered worthless or degenerate to the family. My English teacher read a book how women had to go through the painful process and they had to use perfume to hide the foot stench. In some countries, they still do it today

Scary part of history to me is knowing there’s always heaps more unrecorded, for every bit of evidence left that they did this horrible practice there’s likely thousands of stories of young girls directly killed by this, all forgotten to time

I do remember they said they also did this because small feet were considered attractive. Fun fact: we actually had a 2004 horror movie here addressing this, and they called her "Lotus Feet". It was said she died of fire because she could not run outside of her house in time due to this practice... it's sad that they had to suffer this.
