All of the anecdotes come from pilots who are aware they're in combat with an enemy plane in a BVR fight. In TopGun2 the Su57s think the Tomcat is friendly at first and start the fight from formation. Completely different scenarios.

Maverick and Rooster had the element of surprise and even then they came close to getting blown out of the

They kinda used the 'element of surprise' aspect in the movie. I.e. Su-57 coming up trying to figure out what the F-14 was doing (thinking it was Iranian).

So F-14 already had eyes on the 'stealths'.

Then the Su-57 they didn't know about was about to shoot them down and got outnumbered by F-18s.

Still a 1-in-a-1, 000, 000 scenario... but they did try to dance around the fact that the 5th gen was better in that it was about to kill them.

Edit: SU57 is good looking but is not produced in volume needed to be an operational threat, also.. more importantly The SU57 is NOT stealth sorry Russian fanboys but it’s a knock off, a very good looking one with cool flips but no real valuable capability

The SU57 looks great but too many Russians talking about it like it’s an actual choice for them so let me say this… It has panel gaps worse than a Tesla and rusty rivets worse than your grandpas old barn that will absolutely produce radar cross sections, hence why I say it’s not a full fledge 5th gen stealth fighter.

"Killed them from distance" Would mean using long range air to air missiles, the Russians thought the F14 was friendly thus forcing a dogfight. The matchup is like a gun vs a knife, the gun will kill from distance no doubt but you get too close and than knife will make sure the trigger isn't pulled. Once there was range between the 57 and the 14, the fight was over at which point Hangman showed up.
Really it's all about positioning, WW2 saw a number of jets being shot down by props. These jets not only had stronger weapons but also higher speeds, altitude, etc. So not too far fetched for it to happen with "modern" aircraft given the right conditions.
