There are a lot of secrets to how you can buy cheap tickets for long distance trains:

1) Buy tickets for train rides at around 5am. They are really empty a lot of times and thus, the cheapest (oftentimes even cheaper than those that start around midnight

2) Buy the ticket at the latest a week in advance

3) If you're under 25 years old, check your ticket category, because for people under 25 the ticket prices are lower

As a student who lives quite long train rides away from home, this is the way i pay the least for my tickets (~23€ just for the ticket, +5€ if you wanna book a certain seat. But since the trains during that time are really empty, it's not really necessary)
