'You are gods...' What Did Jesus Mean?

In my opinion, one of the most misunderstood passages in the gospels is in John 10:33-36 when Jesus is talking to the Pharisees. It says, “We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.” Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I have said you are “gods”’? If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the word of God came—and Scripture cannot be set aside— what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’?"

What did Jesus mean when he said the phrase, "you are gods"? Many people claim this is a verse saying that humans were meant to be gods, but this is against everything Jesus and Scripture stood for. Pastor Mike helps bring clarity.

We both understand there are different understandings of this passage. I'd recommend checking out Dr. Michael Heiser's research about this as well.

There are a lot of scriptures that are used to support WoF (Word of Faith) new age/new thought teachings. This is just one and the ones that I see mostly misused in churches and from new age/new thought teachers.

We both understand there can be different understandings of this passage. However, compared to Psalm 82 it becomes clearer.

Bottom line... its definitely *not* saying humans are gods. This contradicts the entirety of scripture, not to mention undermines the identity of God Himself.

I'd recommend checking out Dr. Michael Heiser's research about this as well for another perspective. Thanks for watching everyone! 🤓

Dr Michael Heiser has the absolute best teaching on this topic. It just connects all the dots so to speak.

If we are 'gods" then we leave a lot to be desired...

Psalm 82 is a great example of God rebuking celestial rulers over the earth, assigned some time after Babel (Genesis 10-11, Deuteronomy 32), who did not rule according to His purposes but according to their own. They became corrupt and accepted human worship apart from God and practically erased the memory of the true God from the nations, until Jesus showed up. Unseen realm, I recommend it too even if I don’t agree with some of Dr Heiser’s positions on Genesis.

It's logical. We cannot create angels, people, planets etc. Thus we can ONLY be children of God, created by God to BE His children. . That was always my outlook on what the people said about these scriptures.

Finally! A sane biblical explanation of Psalms 82 and John 10. Thank you!

Thanks Pastor Mike. Best short refutation I've heard. The Romans 13 connection was really eye-opening for me - Ps 82 could also be a warning to our current rulers. Thanks also for emphasizing Ps 82.8 which reminded me of Ps 2.8

Just read that puzzling passage yesterday morning and went to Psalm 82. Thanks for the snippet teaching on this passage in John 10.

I’m so glad others out there know we’re not gods, and that God called things that be not as though they were. We can’t speak or create any thing! If we could speak things into existence, the world wouldn’t be big enough to house all this stuff!

There are many meanings. But when I read the whole psalm this is what I feel the spirit of the scripture is saying.
-Live righteously, be godly to your fellow man, honor your covenants and your Lord’s name sake. Stand in need for those in need of comfort. Be like God by doing his will and keeping his commandments.
-Be Godly or be worldly and be judged accordingly.

Look at Dr. Michael Heizer’s teaching on this passage. Completely different.

If Psalm 82 is merely referring to human rulers, then why would Jesus be using the passage as a justification for admitting being the Son of God? Would that we like Jesus saying he was only calling himself the son of God in a figure of speech?

I had a pastor say to me "God is big G I'm little g so I can do what God can do""...I looked at him and said ""is that right? How about we go to the local swimming pool I want to see you walk on water""!! He looked stunned and walked away...Ive read that when Jesus was referring to the book of judges in which God had authorised the judges to make righteous judgement on His people on His behalf...love to you Melissa for bringing to light these heresies that keep creeping in the Body of Christ from Australia
