Yes, and when you watch the Empire strikes back, this is not only set up and foreshadowed but its pretty strongly implied that the next trilogy's main character would have been Luke's mysterious sister (not Leia).

I think they were looking to be more like the space opera roots of the series where the evil empire is less a force to be overcome, and more a backdrop to tell other stories.

I recall there were some rumors, that Vader was going to be the older brother of Boba Fett, and some of that xan be seen on theyre interaction and how Vader speaks to Boba, is like the elder reprimanded the Younger over a joke or a bad thing they do on the car of the Father (the emperor)

The world did Lucas so wrong, not just how he got badly criticised for the prequels and the use of new technology of cgi and special effects (which today most fans recognise how good they actually were), but also not getting a single oscar in any aspect for any of his 6 films, and for the overkill, seeing live how Disney butchers his creation, that I'm sure hurts him the most.
At least he's got very high profits and wealth, unlike many other artists in the different arts that died poor and thinking the world hated their creations

After that luke would become the new vader, find a Palpatine clone, and Darth Maul would take advantage of the destructuon of the empire by coming out of hiding or whatever being the godfather basically, and there wouldve been a whole trilogy for that. It was supposed to be the original 7 8 and 9
