At age 55 I started to study the violin with no other musical experience. I was in the midst of a midlife crisis. A difficult divorce, struggles with an addiction, job issues you get the picture. The violin was a God send filling a hole in my soul. It was/is so difficult and improvement so incremental that any perceivable improvement was incredibly affirming. Now 11 years later I could not imagine life without my violin and playing it everyday. I have come to understand I will never be able to play the way I want to (The Czardas by Monti ). But I can play to the best of my abilities with great satisfaction. I have just recently been able to do some vibrato obtaining that incredible sweet sound.

Thank you Julia. Sometimes I don't know why I am still trying to learn the violin. I started when I was around 10 years old, I was invited to join a community orchestra and then quit when I was asked to be a soloist. I am so shy. I didn't play for many years and then would on and off alone or with small groups. In the end I would always quit the group. Something just keeps pulling me back. I love the sound and I am stunned but thrilled when I get a phrase right. I am 60 years old and have been invited to join a local fiddle group. I love the people but my fear seriously impacts my playing. So much so I am thinking of quitting again. I am in awe of musicians who just pull out their instruments and play.

I am always happy after every music lesson. I learned organ and violin in Singapore, ukulele in Taiwan and Balalaika in Russia. All my music teachers are amazing individuals! Thank you MUSIC! Thank you Julia for sharing the true meaning of learning music, especially on the strenuous, torturous but rewarding (not yet for me!) path in playing and discovering the art of violin. It is the art of balance, inner strength and relentless pursuit of perfection!

I love classical music and my favorite musicians like Jascha Heifetz, Arthur Grumiaux, Nathan Milstein, Itzhak Perlman, Janine Jansen and others are all violinists. And the sound they can get from their instruments is incredible. This is the main reason for me. I also agree with the reasons you talked about. 🙂

Hi Julia thanks for your inspiring message. I decided to learn violin because i really love music and since i don't have such a nice voice for singing so one day at the church i saw someone playing a violin for praise and worship and from that time on i became so inlove with violin. Its a difiicult thing to learn but i know one day i will.see myself playing on stage with praise and worship songs. And you are one of my ideal violinist on youtube. Please keep me posted and thank you so much for sharing your talents to someone like me. Father bless you more Julia.

I love the sound of the violin. That's what got me wanting to learn. I have a goal song I want to play but I am just starting to play. As of right now the song is too hard for me so I'm starting out with easier song then working my way up to play house of the rising sun. I know it takes time and lots of practice to get there
