Optimist's version: In romantic stories with a happy ending, explosions accompany the lovers' kisses. Moderate optimist's version😉: In the real world, conflict persists and explosions signify a war, which Edward had no idea about in the Simulation.

I have a feeling that the woman is not real, but a product of his imagination, after years of him being alone. The line 'I'm real' kind of hints that he's trying to convince himself of her existence. The story feels a bit like 'Fight Club', where the main character conjures up a whole new identity. Plus, the explosions at the end reinforce my idea, I think :>
