RAW EGG Over Rice in Japan - Day 5

For day 5 of the EGG challenge, we made tamagokakegohan (卵かけご飯) also known as a raw egg over rice. This is a popular breakfast dish in Japan that I highly recommend NOT trying in any country other than Japan. The raw eggs here are totally safe to be eaten whereas in most countries can make you very sick. Let me know what you think in the comments! Eggs produced in japan is one of The safest eggs to eat raw because they are so strict about salmonella that almost no eggs are contaminated with it.

Eat it with a hot steaming rice. The heat of the rice will somehow slightly cook the egg, making it more richer

tip if you're scared about eggs where you are, crack the egg in a bowl and once your rice is done cooking (rice cooker or stovetop), remove the lid, pour the egg on top, lid back on. Steam will half cook the egg, then you can mix and eat.

Also delicious with a bit of soy sauce and either chili crisp oil, gochujang or sambal, depending on what you have.

In Hawaii, I grew up eating "tamago gohan". It's screaming hot rice, shoyu, and raw egg. Mix it quickly so the egg cooks a little.

I love TKG! My host parents tried protecting me for too long from this dish and me being a bit narrow minded at first didnt help (raw eggs are part of european dishes as well but not comonnly eaten).
I do sometimes make myself some rice to eat it with a raw egg now that I'm back. Haven't had any problems yet but I am aware of the risk.

In the UK, it's safe to eat the eggs with the lion printed on them now, even for elderly, pregnant and sickly people (according to UK Gov. food safety watchdog)

If you wanna try this in outside japan, you can try steaming the egg just barely so it’s “cooked” but not so raw, if you’re able too getting pasteurized eggs also helps lower the risk :)

you can most definitely do this in whatever country you’re in. the salmonella is on the egg shell, so it’s advised that you don’t get any egg shell in your raw egg and immediately eat it to avoid salmonella.

In the US only 1 in 20, 000 eggs are infected with salmonella… you are totally fine using “Non Japanese” eggs

If you live in Australia this is also perfectly safe! We have similar food safety standards to Japan

During my dad's body building phase, he would drink raw eggs in the morning along with all his gym buddies. Never had an issue with illness. That being said if you do this with eggs that are of decent quality you should be absolutely fine.

This stuff is even better with natto. Natto tamago is the best

People from outside Japan can cook a poached egg instead to replace raw egg and have a similar experience

I do this. I actually just ate rice with cooked spam (ghetto fabulous) topped with a single raw egg. I’ve never gotten sick from it

yeah as some people know eggs in japan are very clean and are safe to be eaten raw. if u wanna eat japanese food like this i would recommend u to pour very hot water on the egg yolk and then cool it down using cold water, that removes all the bacteria and stuff
