This is my favorite breakfast. I've been eating it regularly since I was a kid. It's very common in Japan, and super simple to make with fresh or leftover rice and eggs. You can find the full written recipe here:

The answer for Kenji's mysterious other name for the dish is "Bukkake Gohan"(ぶっかけ), "Bukkake" can also applied to a lot of dishes, can be udon, soba, ramen. There you have it, why is it used in the porn industry? Because practically it is the same process.

Hi Kenji! I just wanted to say "thank you" for all of these videos. As a leukemia patient slogging his way through chemo at the moment I often don't feel inspired to cook, but many of these uploads do the trick and make me feel like I can actually make something easily. You're a godsend. Cheers!

steam half cup of rice, and when it is done, keep the rice cooker on warm and crack in one or two whole eggs. Close the lid and steam it for a few minutes, and add soy sauce, green onions, and sesame oil and mix everything.

I lived off this as an exchange student in Japan. Rice from the rice cooker we just left on keep warm from the night before, stir in an egg. Add some kewpie, furikake, and you have a darn cheap good breakfast. Every now and then I'd do it more traditional with natto and mustard. I still make it every once in a while when I have leftover rice in the fridge and a craving hits.

It would be amazing for you to do a video on what's inside your pantry. I think one of the biggest reasons why I'm so overwhelmed when trying to cooking any sort of asian cuisine is the shear amount of options you have at the super market and not being able to choose something. It would be great to hear your thoughts on how you curate your pantry items.

According to my dad, some of my earliest words were "egg mama" to ask my mom to make me tamago kake gohan. 😊

Kenji I would absolutely love a video (or article, or something) explaining the differences between all the different varieties of soy sauce! Between Japanese Soy Sauce, Chinese Soy Sauce, Dark Soy Sauce, Light Soy Sauce and more, I am lost.

A bit of egg safety advice if you're worried; the salmonella live on the surface of the egg shell and die off pretty easily with heat. I pour boiled water over the egg for about five seconds when I want to eat raw (I'm a Japanese in UK).

I'd love for Kenji to do a tour of his spice/sauce cabinet one day. Might take forever though.

Once again, a dish full of memories. My dad would add a pad of butter before adding the egg, as well as the MSG. Thanks, Kenji!

I'm always amazed by how stocked ur fridge is with fresh ingredients, how do you manage to use it all up (ie cheeses, vegetables, etc). I want to get better at using up my groceries. Thanks Kenji, love your videos!

Made this for the first time (with a sous vide pasteurized egg just in case) and was blown away. Totally going right on the tool belt for uses for leftover rice.

I discovered this while I was teaching in Japan 30some(!) years ago. It is still one of my all time favorite breakfasts. Love it! So fun to see it here.

You know what, I clicked the video because I love learning about cooking, especially if it's something I know nothing about. I subbed because of the counter-top compost bin, the learning tower for little ones, and letting your pup finish the scraps. You also just seem like a nice person haha. Cheers! 😊
