Quickly Fix Stick Drift Controller (Ghosting) PS5/Xbox

Stick drift is a pain, either for Xbox, PlayStation or any other gaming platform for your controller. This quick video shows the best way to fix it. Since it is all centered in the potentiometer, we want to fix the analog by cleaning the wipers and getting any debris or hair out of there.

Buy replacement analog modules.

My resistance track was worn to the metal. On left stick. Had to de solder green fixture and solder a new one. Now it WORKS!!!!

And I thought doing this with the Xbox was hard

I just did this to mine. Ordered new potentiometers put them in and now works great. I was alot more gentle tho. This dude is manhandling it like he has 10 extra parts for everything laying around

I usually change the whole potentiometer. So I’m sure it will last again for some good time before needing to open it again. Usually the problem is whit the resistance material that with time will come off, so if you open it and have a solder machine and the skill to do it, I think is better to change the whole piece.

Na the resistance thingy always wears off its the reason we have stick drift they made them either cheaper or thinner for better response time yet it was a bad move

Genius! I needed two videos to fix my DualSense! 1st how to disassemble and how to assemble the DualSense. And 2nd how to clean it (this video). Thank you very much! Problem fixed.

It should be a crime for manufacturers to continute to use this type of potentiometer which WILL EVENTUALLY FAIL, instead of a different version that can't fail (GMR or hall-effect).

So to potentially save people from wasting time on a repair that does nothing…

It is practically NEVER just a matter of a cleaning or a problem with the metal wiper…
However it is practically ALWAYS the carbon track that is worn down which results in constant contact…

SO MUCH BETTER THAN THOSE 20min TUTORIALS! Granted i've done this before but that was years ago so I just needed a quick little refresh video lol

Huge thanks for this video, thought id give it a try instead of buying new and it indeed fixed my issue on a 20 dollar thrift find. Much appreciated

Alternatively you could get a controller with hall effect sticks

Note to anyone who is going to replace any modules, save yourself some time and get Hall effect or better yet TMR joysticks. They are getting cheaper now with high quality modules like Ginfull TMR and Gulikit TMR being a few bucks to get, solder in, and calibrate. Its a one and done solution for regualar use. Otherwise fixing potentiometer modules from drift comes from three factors other than dirt from my experience. Those factors being oxidation/corrosion on the wiper, carbon damage on the green track side, and mechanical and damage to the wiper or stick mechanism. Fixing the potentiometers will likely be a temporary solution. A new TMR stick is the proper repair.

Wiper oxidation = very lightly sand only the wiper or find new wiper.
Debris on the carbon track = clean.
Mechanical damage or drift after cleaning = replace module.

This can solve something, if the concern comes from dirt. But majority of time it is the part that is worn and there is nothing else to do than replace the stick or potentiometer

If the contact is worn out, you have a few options: buy a new controller (I recommend hall effect controllers, they are much cheaper now), but if you really like your current controller, there are tutorials on how to change the potentiometer if you are not scared of a little soldering. I once again, recommend to make the replacement a hall effect one, you can find tutorials on youtube.

What they could do is have a recalibration button that sets the make it think the stick in back in the center but no they want you to buy a new one

Bro thanks so much for the instructions in the other video to solve this problem ❤

this works for only a little while. The best fix is to replace with a hall effect sensor instead and recalibrate. Also you fail to mention you should re-lubricate the wiper with silicon grease

I cleaned the wiper and after that, it went from occasional stick drift to major. What happened?
