You’re finally in ketosis and you’re feeling great, but then you find out you have high blood sugar! Find out why you shouldn’t worry.

In this video, we’re going to talk about what it means to have high blood glucose on keto. First, let’s quickly go over insulin resistance. If a person is insulin resistant, they typically have very high insulin in their body—around 5 to 9x the normal amount.

Insulin regulates blood sugars by lowering them and keeping them down. Over time, this mechanism weakens and your insulin levels drop. This leads to high blood sugar, prediabetes, and eventually diabetes.

If you have high blood glucose on keto, you probably had high insulin before you started the keto diet. Once you begin a ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting, your body is no longer spiking insulin. Without high insulin, there is nothing keeping your blood sugars down.

The good news is that high blood glucose on keto is temporary as your body transitions into ketosis. Your blood sugar will eventually stabilize.

This was very comforting. I have adjusted my diet for several years now, am dropping carbs, and following a lot of Dr. Berg’s advice. However, my A1C has not changed much and my glucose level measured this morning at 107. Was very bummed until I watched this video. Thanks Doc!

Been doing keto for the past year, lost average of 50lbs, fasting sugars have now stabilized to around 82. 2 meals a day w/ intermittent fasting, (18/6). Walk 4-6 miles a day. Never felt better my whole adult life! Many thanks, Dr. Berg!

Dr Berg... please do a video on so called “physiological insulin resistance”. It is a very real and under explained phenomenon.

Thank you for this video! I'm so relieved! When I first went on keto 4 months ago, my blood sugar did go down and then after about a month it started going back up. Now I understand what us happening and I can just give it a little more time and stop stressing about the slight rise in my blood sugar!

I have been feeling like a total failure after starting Keto a month ago with few results. I purchased a blood glucose meter yesterday and this is exactly the issue that I was seeing so maybe I’m not failing, maybe it’s just a process and I’m in the beginning stages...thank you for sharing this!

Thx for this video Dr Berg, I recently started Keto again after my A1C came back at a 5.6. I'm on day 3 of keto and tested my BS after a fatty steak and eggs and it came back at 110 - 115 which kind of surprised me a bit. I guess I'll just give it more time and be a lotta bit more patient with the transition into Keto!

SO GLAD I JUST WATCHED THIS! I do not do sugars... hardly at all, but my Glucose is high. I've been having a rough time since the holiday, but I do try to focus. I know what I need to do, and realize it's all about me and my choices. While I haven't eaten real sweets, I upped my carbs, and enjoyed some real bread here and there. Anyhoo - I couldn't figure out why my glucose was so high. I'm getting back on track and will get it together!

Thank you for taking the time to explain this. I have done Keto in the past and had success losing weight but didn’t measure glucose and ketones. I have since purchased a blood monitor device and have kept to a strict keto diet and intermittent fasting. During the days my range is in the 80’s but will fluctuate to 103(high). I wanted to give up because I didn’t know why it would keep going up and down but this video helped me understand why. Thank you!

I like this logic, but I think there is more to it. I had this problem too. My fasting glucose was going higher and higher after I started keto. After about 4 months it reached 105 to 110 every day. I think you are right that in that period my insulin levels were improving which would be the reason why it took several months for fasting levels to go up.

But that glucose has to come from somewhere.

And it can't be from carbs. Even if I was eating more carbs than I thought, after 12 or more hours, the glucose in my blood wouldn't come from dietairy glucose.

With low insulin, the liver is stimulated to make glucose through gluconeogenesis, which I believe is the source of fasting glucose levels. 4 hours after eating my glucose levels are lower (insulin did its job) than after 15 hours. The only source for this extra glucose that I can think of is gluconeogenesis.

So I tested it. I reduced protein in my diet. And it took just 3 days for my fasting glucose levels to drop below 90.

Moderate protein is very important on keto. It's actually the main source of glucose when doing keto.

This is exactly what's happening to me right now. My first week on keto I had to stop taking metformin because I was experiencing hypoglycemia. For a few days my sugars went up and down. Week number 2 and 3 my fasting blood sugar's average in the 90s and low 100. Now they are slowly starting to creep up in my 4th and 5th week averaging a hundred to a hundred and ten. Thank you this makes sense
