Today we’re going to talk about what happens if your blood sugars are high in the mornings. Let’s say you’re doing keto and intermittent fasting, but you’re blood sugars are higher in the morning. Why is that?

Well, if your carbs are less than 10g per day, you may need to lower your carbs. But, if you’re hardly consuming any carbs, this could be because your insulin resistance is so severe your insulin can’t handle even a small amount of carbs.

The insulin could be dysfunctional because the cells that make insulin are not fully there. You don’t have enough beta cells in the pancreas to produce the insulin necessary to keep the blood sugars in check.

There are four things you could do. All of these things target and support the beta cells of the pancreas.

What you could do:
1. Berberine
2. Beef pancreas (Ancestral)
3. Milk thistle
4. Exercise

I would also look for other causes man, 10 grams of carbs is ultra low. Insulin receptor micronutrients, mitochondrial dysfunction, excessive blue light, adrenals etc. There are so many etiologies for hyperglycemia and insulin resistance. Keep up the good work Dr!

Dr. Jason Fung addresses this phenomenon of attenuated beta cell function in people who are NOT type 1 diabetics. He asserts that probably the reason they have diminished beta cell function is due to the fact that fat has infiltrated the pancreas, essentially gumming up the proper functioning of beta cells. So, unlike type 1 diabetes, where the decline in insulin production from the pancreas is the result of actual beta cell death, in the case of people who are NOT type 1 diabetic, but still produce low levels of insulin, it could be a result of perfectly good beta cells which are having their functioning impaired by a blockade of fat. For such a problem, Dr. Fung, if I understood him correctly, recommends just doing longer fasts. So for such tough cases, simply doing a low carb diet and a common 16:8 or 23:1 fast may not be enough. You may have to introduce a multi-day fast, periodically, in order to truly remove the ectopic fat which is causing this obstruction at the beta cell level.

Okay dawn phenomenon. This is true, yet I'd argue that this "insulin resistance" may just be peripheral not pathological. Also considering that glucose levels are naturally higher in the AM due to cortisol and thus glucagon secretion. The physiology become very conservative with glucose because of it's lack thereof. I've experienced dramatic rises and falls while entering keto and when coming off. Which is why this a gradual process (or should be). Thanks for the info.

The words "insulin resistance" scare me. Trying to get back towards keto again knowing I've binged on all the wrong foods during winter. Thank you for your uploads, it's a great reminder to stay on track.

I don’t like the idea of not having a medical person working with you when trying to figure dosages etc, your history etc. I wish medicine would come around to prevention rather than diagnosing disease once your sick. Seems useless to me to not include prevention. I no longer have trust in doctors but can’t afford to pay for private doctors that don’t take Medicare or supplemental insurance. It’s just crazy.

How about eating excess protein? When I used to eat more than 6 ounces of protein my sugar was high in the morning.

If you please, a doctor will make a table showing the needs of each person of vitamins and minerals, with an indication of the age, quantity, and daily dose. Thank you very much.

Dr. I’ve been on carnivore for 4 months and my glucose runs from 114 to 139 24/7. Was on Shake calorie deficit diet prior to carnivore. Dr checked my glucose and was 97. Now on carnivore four months it’s higher. This has left me confused, upset and desperate. Will your Berberine and beef pancreas supplement help with this if so how long do I take them? I’ve lost all the weight I need to and feel great. Thanks for all you do.

It took a while but it finally went down. I did some 72 hours fasts and OMAD. It took about 2-3 months for me.

I watched your interview with Ghaida. I don't know how to believe it. You are very kind, this girl exaggerates her words and her psychological state, not membership, but she only wanted to attract the attention of others

"Take it before bed, so you can kinda sleep on it." Hahahaha, Dr. Berg, you have the best humor.

If you have severe insulin resistance does it ever get better and if so does it take years? Will that person ever get normal readings if they follow all the advice faithfully.

I'm diabetic and I've done 3 back to back 7 day water fasts and my blood sugars are still too high. Without insulin I carnt get them down. With insulin I put to much weight on. Can not take supplements due to histamine intolerance and other food intolerances. Fasting was my last hope. Keto/ carnivore stopped working 18 months ago.
