The button down shirt, bowtie, and the hair, I'm getting STRONG 90s Saturday morning educational show vibes, and I'm here for it.

My Christian husband brought up an argument that a priest in Australia had made regarding LGBT+ issues (my husband is very pro-LGBT+ rights) and the justifications he was using in the Bible. My very educated husband looked at me and said, "it comes from something called 'apologetics', I think. Have you heard of it?" It took so much willpower not to fall out of bed laughing.

Every time apologists quotemines Darwin, my appreciation of the man and his intellect grows. The dude lived in the 1800s was fairly religious and in a letter admits that he doesn't understand cosmology except to refute Aquinas first mover argument, and the posits no one understands cosmology which probably was broadly true at the time, and yet insists that Man had a duty to understand it.
Thanks Viced Rhino for reading out that entire quote!

"I'm not an expert, but I'll point you toward things from people that are experts."

I appreciate this more than I could ever say. Thank you for this notion, by itself. It's so hard for people to say they don't know and point to someone that does, and it warms me every time you and others in this corner do so.

"The universe had a cause!"
"Seems reasonable."
"We call that cause, 'god'."
"I suppose you could."
"And it is personal and conscious."
"I don't think there's any evidence for . . . "
"IT WANTS TO KNOW WHAT YOU DO WITH YOUR JUNK!!!"
*sigh*

Ah, theological science!
I'm sitting at a table right now.
This table started to exist. Not even a Christian preacher would deny that.
The table consists of wood. Even a Christian preacher can see that.
Wood grows on trees. Even a Christian preacher would agree with that.

Inevitable conclusion: this table grew on a tree.

And now excuse me while I'm out in the woods looking for a fitting nightstand.

I don't know if people are telling you this, but the production quality of your videos has really come along these last few months. Your efforts and prowess at videomaking are seen and appreciated!

My favorite example of common sense failing is the coloration of reef fish. We have all seen pictures of these bright red, yellow, and orange fish darting around reefs, vibrant and obvious. The classic 'common sense' explanations were that the colors warded off predators or attracted mates.

However, researchers at NOAA realized that, at any depth lower than about 30', these colors would not be visible due to the lack of red-yellow wavelengths. Therefore, the counterintuitive explanation arose, that the bright vibrant reds and yellows were actually camouflage, turning the fish black at depth.

It's nice to see that the low bar Bill clip is still being used. I feel the same way about Bob Nodell's "15 degree per hour drift" clip.

7:29 Unless my understanding of physics has degraded quite a bit over time I'd say your explanation with the "tugging rungs" is pretty much spot on.

The bow tie is like Clark Kent's glasses, you put it on and you become a black rhinoceros.

12:18 - Ah, yes, the famous scientist named Hawkings... 🤣
When theists don't even know the actual name and can't be bothered to spend the five seconds to look it up to make sure... 🥺

The rock maker counter is such a perfect response to the watchmaker argument. It really does perfectly explain all the ways the watch fails to prove design, and actually shows that even creationists subconsciously view the natural world as undesigned

My favorite go to example of something that looks designed but isn't are the erosion patterns that people keep thinking were carved by humans.

There's one in Scandinavia that people tried to translate for hundreds of years and one in Brazil that's got a bunch of conspiracy theories around it.

I've often imagined someone meeting a being of great power and asking, 'Are you God?'
The being replies, 'What do you mean by that question? What answer are you looking for?'

My mother (Who is still extremely religious, goes to church every single week) was the one who actually convinced me that God does not exist.
I was already severely wavering in the little faith I had (I hated going to church at 9 in the morning) when I was attending confirmation classes.
My mother being the one teaching those classes. There was one day when she gave my class (of like 4 people) the analogy of this
"The chances of earth being a place where humans can exist as we know it. Are extremely small, probably about as small as if you took six, six sided cubes with letters on each face. Through them into the air and had them all land on top of each other and spell something."
The only thing I could think of was, yeah that's a pretty small chance. But how small? 1 in 100 billion, 1 in 1 trillion? Certainly not much more than that. And then what struck me most was me going What the hell do you think every other planet in our galaxy alone is, but that random throw of chance. Earth just happened to hit the proverbial jack-pot.

One of those things that bloodletting is still used for is only still used because we have no better option to relieve the high blood pressure caused by the condition, "Polycythemia vera" It also is no longer a really invasive technique being basically the same as donating blood.
