Dr. Jawad talks about the benefits and deficiency of Vitamin B1: Thiamine.

Vitamin B1, which is also referred to as thiamine, is a coenzyme used by the body to metabolize food for energy and to maintain proper heart and nerve functions. Thiamine has the important role of helping us digest and extract energy from the foods we eat by turning nutrients into useable energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Thus, a thiamine deficiency is something you definitely want to avoid.

The human body cannot produce thiamine, so we must ingest it from our diet to prevent thiamine deficiency. What is the disease caused by a deficiency of thiamine? A thiamine deficiency can cause a disorder called beriberi, which has been seen in certain undernourished populations for thousands of years. Beriberi can lead to muscle wasting and severe cardiovascular problems, including an enlarged heart.

People at an increased risk of developing thiamine deficiency include alcoholics, those with anorexia, people with liver damage or liver disease, and those eating too little calories or lots of processed/refined foods.

I've got to say. I've never had a wrestler talk to me about the benefits of Vitamin B1 before. But this was informative, thank you.

B1 made a huge difference for me. Best part, immediate change. Within 4 hours i felt the change. Being a skeptic and already on a B complex supplement I didn’t believe a word but tried. Next day cut the 500 mg tablet in half, following day back to the B complex supplement. I could feel that I wasn’t as energetic. Back to 500mg of B1.

Not a placebo as my blood work, blood pressure and increased mobility are all see in the results. Weigh loss is a side benefit 👍

I added b1 and think it’s helping me lose weight, slow, but to see the scale move feels like a miracle! I don’t get how bcz I always take vitamins and was taking berberine and cinnamon to help with sugar levels. Omad, low carb 8 weeks, no weight loss, added b1 and I’m down 4 lbs. not much but happy finally see something.

Thanks doc! I just started benfotiamine last week as I heard it can help with sleep apnea by stimulating the respiratory system. But an amazing effect that I definitely attribute to taking the benfotiamine is that I stopped getting the sleeping hands at night. Longest time I’ve been waking up during the night with burning, tingling, numb hands. So benfotiamine is worth it

I am from India and sadly I am not getting any brand of B1 tablets of 300mg. So, I started taking only 40mg of B1 daily for my vertigo.

Thank you for the video and importing your knowledge. I am a practicing neurologist and very interested in B1 therapy my patience. You mentioned that water soluble makes the vitamin last longer. I was under the impression that fat soluble vitamins especially some thing like benfotiamine A fat soluble form of thiamine would be better simply because it’s in our fat stores? Please help me as I probably misunderstood this concept. Thank you very much

I just started benfothiamine today. I took two doses of about 150 mg each. I read that it can help people with Hashimoto's who have fatigue. Yesterday someone told me that people are being relieved from sleep apnea with thiamine.

Great video Dr. Jawad. I used B1 to help with anxiety and stress. I discovered this supplement about 8 years ago. Thus far, I have been using it and have recommended it to one of my students to help them with test anxiety. Do you have any B1 studies about anxiety and stress; their correlation to studying, exam prep, and test-taking? Thank you, Dr. Jawad.

Is anoraxia caused by B1 deficiency? I see a lot of YouTube videos about choline citrate to increase acetylcholine. Which do you recommend to increase acetylcholine? Can B1 and Choline citrate be taken together? Thank you
