Trapped Alive: The Tragic Death of Kyle Plush | Accidental Deaths

The story of 16 year old Kyle Plush, like many other stories I have covered, just goes to show that death can strike anywhere, anytime. Whether that’s at work, in your vehicle or out and about with friends. However, where this story differs to the others is the reaction and response from the people we expect to help us in these terrible situations, unfortunately for Kyle the reaction wasn’t near good enough.

He was reaching for his tennis equipment in his 2004 Honda odyssey minivan when the third-row seat collapsed on him, trapping him between the seat and the minivan floor. Plush was flipped upside down by the force of the motion and the weight of the seat, his head in the back well and legs in the air against the minivan's rear door. After searching for less than 20 minutes the police closed the incident and went on with their day. Plush then suffocated and died. Plush was discovered in a parking area near the school in Madisonville by his father, Ronald Plush, at 9 p.m., about six hours after his first 911 call.

I think the saddest part of this story is how utterly preventable it was. Gross incompetence on the part of the responders. Kid managed to call for help *twice* and still they couldn't be bothered to actually look for him.

utterly devastating, because he 'did everything right'. he called the police, quickly, and gave clear information on what he was experiencing and where he was. and then even called a second time as he realized that help was not coming. it was totally preventable had the dispatchers and officers done their jobs.

Imagine the relief getting through to a police responder. Terrified but knowing someone was coming to rescue and then they don't ....twice! Disgusting people!

I’m pretty sure this is one very good reason why 911 operators are supposed to stay on the phone with callers until help arrives. I wish the cops and the operator would have been charged with manslaughter. This was completely unacceptable. RIP, Kyle. Good on you for trying your hardest up until your last moments.

As an ex Police dispatcher of 10 years I’m disgusted! Appalling job. Unbelievable. The poor boy called twice and told them exactly the area he was in. They just had to locate the vehicle. You send every free unit you can to do areas until it’s found. You find it. You don’t just throw your hands up and cancel the job!

He literally told them that he was about to die, and he described EXACTLY what car he was in looked like and where it was. Those dispatchers and officers are practically murderers.

The horror going through this young boy while he was calling, screaming, crying for help is something so beyond terrifying that my heart breaks for what he went through. Unimaginable

This story angers me sooo much. Could’ve totally been prevented had the idiot dispatcher and cops did their jobs correctly. And thank you for not including the audio. Couldn’t bear to hear that again. 😢

“Tell my mom I love her” brought tears to my eyes.

I feel like if he could’ve had the chance to call his Dad, he would’ve been able to get there quicker than the incompetent police. Horrible that he had to be the one to finally discover his son.

If he just had lied on the phone and said he has big amounts of drugs in his van the police probably had located him. The priorities of the system are just sad.

I’m not big on suing towns, states, etc. for certain things but this is insane. He described the car! How hard was it to find?

This one is so infuriating. If either of the 911 operators had taken this seriously he could have been helped.

This happened where I live so it was all over the news before going national. It is absolutely horrific how the 911 system failed him. RIP Kyle

That dispatcher should be thrown in prison. She left out vital information and that's what got him killed. She didn't communicate to the cops how urgent the situation was.

This may seem like a freak accident, one in a million, but something very similar to this happened to someone I know. Fortunately someone was nearby to help them escape, but it can happen. Please be careful out there.

What an absolute tragedy. So preventable. I love how the family is truly championing for change in the midst of honoring their son and making those who failed him be held responsible.

I think someone ahould do a compilation of the many times dispatchers and cops just don't do the minimum effort thing to actually do their job and it results in awful deaths and destruction.

What's infuriating is that the kid did what he was supposed to. During a 911 call, he remained calm, but the fact that he was calm made the operator think it was a prank.

Edit: That 911 operator is responsible for a child's death.

How can a 911 operator hear this and not take it seriously? Even if you thought it was a prank, you never take that chance. I wonder if that operator is genuinely sorry, or if they continue their daily lives without a single care.
