From the video:

From birth he had digestive problems and was prescribed antibiotics his whole life and he even took accutane. His gut microbiome was very damaged. He finally felt relief after adopting a whole foods plant based diet. He did well for a while but then digestive issues started coming back after a period of stress. So here’s what he did:

1. Low stomach acid: he took betaine hcl tablets before each meal for a few months to train his stomach to produce enough acid on its own. He also would consume lemon water or water with apple cider vinegar throughout the day to help bring up his stomach acid levels.

2. Mindful eating: he was not chewing his food enough before swallowing. He made sure to start chewing each bite at least 20 times before swallowing.

3. Relax before eating: along with eating more mindfully, he would relax himself before eating to activate his parasympathetic nervous system (the “rest and digest” system) by taking 5-10 deep breaths before eating. No distractions during eating like watching videos or doing homework- just focus on your meal. Don’t eat when you’re stressed out.

Doing these things helped him reverse his gas, bloating, reflux, irregular BM’s, and undigested food particles.

So many bodybuilders talk about eating too frequently but none ever talk about the digestion problems that come with it and how to overcome those. Being a skinny guy my whole life and also having bloating problems, finally someone who can give advice on how to deal with digestion issues during bodybuilding. Keep it up.

My own guidelines for eating right and good digestion.

1. Don't drink water or any kind of fluid 20 minutes before you eat. This washes away enzymes that help digestion as soon as food enter your mouth. Don't drink during a meal either, this will wash away enzymes too.

2. Super chew everything, it mixes the enzymes that help with digestion and it breaks down your food thoroughly.

3. Time your meals accordingly. Leave time for proper digestion, preferably 6 hours at the least. If you constantly eat throughout the day, your body will constantly revert energy to the newly arriving foods, meaning that the rest that is in your guts, is being left with less attention or less energy to digest. This can cause troubles (food taking too long to go through, putrefaction or poor digestion in general). This also means that one of the biggest aspects of your body's operations, namely the elimination side of things (you have ingestion, digestion, absorption and elimination), is being duped constantly because most of your energy is used for digestion, instead of elimination. Your cells eat and poop just like you do!

4. Eat your foods according to water content. The more water content a food has, the faster it will digest. If you eat a bowl of oatmeal first, followed by half a water melon, the water melon will catch up to the oat meal pretty quickly, causing a traffic jam in your guts. The water melon can start fermenting, creating gas and alcohol, since the slower to digest oatmeal is blocking it. Windy huh?

5. Take time for your food. Look at your food, recognize it, smell it, taste it and chew on it thoroughly! Be there when you have your meal, instead of doing 20 other things at the same time.

Simnett, I cannot be more grateful. For the past 3 years I have suffering with issues like you mentioned, acid reflux, bloating, excessive gas....
My appetite was terrible because of this, so I lost some weight which made me develop anaemia and hypoglycaemia.
I went to a few doctors and did many tests but none figured out the cause.
A few days ago I did the Betain Hcl test, for the past 3 days my bloating has disappeared. I've been taking 2500mg of HCL at each meal. I've almost cried from joy for the past few days. Hopefully I can make my body feel this way without the capsules eventually.

I love that you took the time to figure out what was going on with your body. I definitely think doctors tend to just prescribe medications instead of trying to get to the root of certain problems. Great video.

I’m always amazed when I watch these videos. There’s so many different theories out there on root causes of gut alignments. I truly believe that a high percentage of these issues are stress related. You said it you’re self you felt worse when you went back to school and we’re broke. Sounds like stress to me.

This is so great!! Sufficient stomach acid also sends the signal to the gallbladder to engage and contract to release bile. So without that signal, sludge and stones can form and accumulate more easily.

I stumbled on this video around the time you put it out - and I'd been suffering, like you, much of my life with digestion issues - my mother also had a similar thing - tums and such were often eaten throughout my life. But your video helped me figure out that it was low acid and NOT high acid that was the problem. I've made ginger a big part of my diet over the last couple of years or so.
I just wanted to thank you! Because this video has helped so much with my life.

Thank-you. This was wonderful, thank-you for keeping it short and concise too. I had an epiphany just the other day that one (of a few) reasons that there was 'prayer' before a meal was probably to get us to be mindful, rest, take a breath and be grateful. Thank-you. I used to always have stomach problems. The biggest thing that has helped me is intermittent fasting. I wait til 12:00 everyday before I eat my first meal. I have no real problems anymore. And of coarse, I eat all whole foods.

OMG your info about the low stomach acid just blew my mind away. thank you so much. I have so much acid reflux in the last 5-6 years. But I never thought that I would be low in the acid. My family uses baking soda drinking since forever for acid reflux but I never knew about the timing of burping and the meaning of it. Thank you for this information. this just made me realize that all this time I had low acid and I do have the issues of not chewing the food properly. thank you, thank you, thank you! And YES, please make more videos like this. I learned so much in the past 2-3 days since I have discovered your channel. My husband and I started a whole food plant-based journey, so we are very new to this and we need lots of good info and delicious recipes.
