I have discovered that when meeting or knowing someone, if it feels out of balance or weird in any way, trust your feelings. Things do not get better, they just get worse. You wouldn't sit through a whole movie if in the first five minutes you found you really didn't like the characters, the plot or the feelings it gave you. Don't wait until you've got some kind of investment there, or until they make you feel obligated somehow.

My mom has HPD and I think it's important to note that being suggestible usually only extends to people in positions of authority or on their same level. She would never listen to me when I told her things, or people who she felt were below her, until she heard it from someone else, then all the sudden she acted like it was the most genius information. When I went to college she even accidentally took out a $10k loan in her name because the lady at the front desk told her that parent-plus loans are in the student's name. I tried showing her that it was under her name and she even refused to look at the research I tried showing her. She was also convinced to move across the country for a married man who promised that he'd leave his wife if she moved there, and then didn't believe me when I told her that he said she was crazy and would never get with her. At one point when I was a kid she also let a scammer convince her to quit her six-figure job and give them over $100, 000 cash to set up a business that was fake.

I have a 41 year old sister who is this ball of ridiculous energy, irresponsibility, promiscuity, attention seeking, tantrum throwing, and upheaval. She is so, so difficult to be around or talk to on any level. It's like trying to have a conversation with a volatile actress in play for which you have no script. I have spoken to her only a handful of times in the last decade and I've regretted it every time.

Easily influenced is a good point. Despite my wife being in the auction business for 30+ years and having scammed and seen thousands of others scammed, she's the first to fall for a scam. When I point this out she becomes overly emotional and goes off the deep end, but come the next get rich quick scam, or a new miracle spiritual healing thing, she's first in line. Decisions are made with emotions only, no reasoning.

Thank you for covering HPD. I think it’s one of the most insidious personality disorders because it’s hard to spot being masked with magnanimity. It’s real!! It’s draining! Don’t axe it!

Histrionic comes from the Latin word histrionicus: pertaining to acting and theater. It has nothing to do with women.
Hysterical, on the other hand, comes from the Greek word hystos, meaning womb. This is the word that has been used to pathologize women's physical and mental health.
The two words have completely different origins. And meanings.
But it's possible to be both hysterical and histrionic 😋

My narc has one of those soft voices too when she's trying to impress people. When she is her true self it changes dramatically!

Dr. Bernstein's book "emotional vampires" has a good chapter on Histrionics. He talks about male Histrionics and female Histrionics. Thanks Dr. Ramani!

As a forensic psychologist who has assessed individuals facing criminal charges and nowadays works with survivors of abuse and crime, you have given a good summary of NPD and HPD which are often seen in individuals who deliberately harm others and in many cases don't care about the consequences of their behaviour. Thank you for addressing these conditions which more people need to be informed about.

With a histrionic parent you know the full meaning of lack of maturity... Less "psycho" and cold manipulation than narcissism, but the lack of parental care and emotional presence takes its toll...

Dad: histrionic/grandiose narc / Mom: covert passive aggressive narc. Very hard to deal with those two so I stopped trying.

My ex accused me of having this after I told him he was a narcissist. He did this so he could try to convince me that it was wrong that I was nice to everyone, including guys, and he said it was inappropriate seduction. Thank you for covering this doctor Ramani ❤️

My Dad was more histrionic than my Mom, She was an emotionally malignant narc and he just lost it on occasion after dealing with her. He was a light weight fighter in his youth and was fierce in the ring, others feared him in his class level. Yet my mom would nag him about everything until he would reach the boiling point. I hated to be in the back seat of the car with both of them in the front seat, I kept my hand ready to open the door if they really blew up. Even then self preservation was a high instinct with me. I am 65 and I remember that feeling in my core still. When it is triggered I am out of there no matter where I am.

Oof, I know someone who sounds a lot of the Histrionic person. They always want to use me to vent to. I finally told them recently that they should probably see a therapist and they told me "I've tried and I've come to realize that I'm the only one that can fix myself. " The problem is the lack of being able to self evaluate and really fix the behaviors that they don't want to acknowledge. 🤷🏻‍♀️
