I’m private investigator Ken Childs. And today I’d like to talk to you about how to hire a private investigator. Hopefully, I’m gonna make it easier for you, and take the stress and anxiety out of the whole situation.
So, the three tips I want to talk you about on how to hire a private investigator. Tip #1, referrals. Everybody knows somebody that knows an attorney, and they’re a great resource. Typically, they’ve dealt with private investigators before. The good thing about dealing with somebody that has dealt with a private investigator before is that usually comes with a story, “Oh, my gosh. This investigator did this for me,” “Oh, they were able to do that for me”. And further qualifying why should you at least consider that private investigator for your list.
Tip #2, Google. Yes, Google. Jump on the internet, and what I would do is search private investigator plus the city that you live in, or where the investigation you think may originate. So, for example, I’m here in Los Angeles, so I would Google search Los Angeles and private investigator, or if you’re in Dallas, again, private investigator “/” or “space” Dallas. That’s gonna punch a bunch of results, some people on the map, you may want to choose someone that’s like closer to you, you may want to go and interview them, I don’t know what your case is about, but with that you’re gonna get a bunch of investigators. And so, you compile a list. I would do my best to come up with maybe five to ten, and then I’ll tell you what to do with that in a moment.
Another resource, tip #3 would be the local association, and they’re a great resource for the simple fact that you know these people are gonna be licensed, they’re gonna be insured, they’re ever growing, looking to ever expand their knowledge base and grow in the industry. So, that’s a great resource as well. And how to find that would be, again, go back to Google, I would punch [Unclear/00:02:00], and punch in private investigator and association. If all kind of random stuff is popping up, then just punch in your state, California. So then, the results that would pop up will naturally be like, “Cali. California Association of Licensed Investigators” or “PICA – Professional Investigators of California”. I’m a member to this association. And again, it’s a great resource, and you go through their little drop-down menus of what kind of investigator you need, what city and all the other stuff, you can take it to the next level. Again, once you’ve found an investigator there, or two or three from there, add them to your list.
Perfect. Now you have a list of maybe five to ten private investigators that are local, people that you want to reach out to. And so, now what we do is we even take it a step further. What I recommend, what I always recommend is hiring a licensed insured investigator. So, in order to verify that, I would do it on my own, you just simply Google search, again, private investigator and the term “verify license”. So, that way you’re gonna get your local agency. So, with California that’s BSIS. And they’re gonna pop up number 1 or 2 on the list, and it’s gonna say, “Verify Private Investigator License”. So, go through their menu, pop in the company name or the individual, so you would search “Paramount Investigative Services Inc.” or you would search, “Ken Childs”, and it’ll give you a couple people to pop up and you select the right guy, or it’s maybe my license number, punch in the license number and it’s gonna tell you whether I’ve had against my license, whether it’s current or expired, or [Unclear/00:03:38]. And then, that’s great. If it’s current, boom, you know, put a checklist, this is a person you’re gonna call. And then, if they’re not, or if they’re suspended, or you’re not really feeling it, you can either call BSIS and see if they like expand on it, or you could simply cross them off the list, there’s plenty of other investigators to work with.
So, those are my tips for you on how to hire a private investigator. I hope you take a little stress and anxiety out of it. If that still is a little too much for you. Please, feel free to call Paramount Private Investigative Services. You can reach me at 877-456-7726.
