People say the Dr is being manipulative here, but I kinda like it. He lets Clara fully play out this scenario of betraying him for someone else she loves, realizing the consequences, then looks her in the eye and says "I still love you, I will help you".

Doctor: *snaps fingers*
TARDIS: *opens*

This scene is meant to show how grief can make us do unnatural things. She is willing to defy the Doctor, to break ALL the rules to relieve the heartbreak of losing Danny. This scene isnt "rubbish" because the Doctor explains that he let the scenario play out the way she wanted. To see how far she'd go. It makes the idea of them both making the Hybrid more plausible. They are so similar by the end that she forgets that she isnt as immortal as the Doctor and in his own grief remains in the confession dial for millions of years; all to break the rules and save Clara the very same way she is trying to save Danny.

This era also ages gracefully with Capaldi's acting.

The keys are just spares, The doctor knows that the TARDIS chooses who it takes, Whether or not the keys were burnt they are just spares.

I like how Clara will only literally accept a "yes" or a "no". If the Doctor didn't clarify on that "yes", Clara would've thought he meant yes to saving Danny. Clara seems.. very very closed-minded, thoughtful and selfish in this scene.

HOWEVER, the Doctor.. did do something similar with Clara herself, trying to stop HER OWN death.

Don't know about anybody else but this made total sense to me. Clara's lost the first (human) man she ever truly loved, she's utterly grief-stricken and knows that somebody with strict rules for cause and effect could in theory save him. When she's finally thrown away the last key, she comes to her senses and realises how awful what she's done is.

Am I the only one laughing at the cartoonish sound effects of the keys entering the lava? 😅

The scariest part, is that she is grieving and hurting more than ever, and she finds - Anything - she can to pin the doctor into “Yes, you can save him!”

With “you rewrote history, you rewrote your own death”

Cuz the doctor “Can” do it, but he learns he - Shouldn’t - mess with time

This scene doesn't totally work for me but his line afterwards sold me on Capaldi "do you think I care for you so little that betraying me would make a difference"

I'm surprised he didn't bring up those creatures from when Rose saved her dad. They could've done a whole episode where the docter says fine and Saves Danny, just to show Clara why they need him to die again and why you don't bring people back from the dead

For those who say that he should've left her there and stuff like that, don't look at the situation from your but from the Doctor's perspective.
Clara is going through an enormous amount of grief, and who knows grief the best but Doctor.
The Doctor knew what she needed to go through, and she helped her go through it, you can see the moment when she realized what she had done.
This scene was perfectly done, and if he didn't helped her in this situation, he wouldn't be the Doctor.

If the Doctor only has seven TARDIS keys, he’s gonna need to make some more for all of his future companions

But the doctor can open the door by snapping his fingers so it kinda removes the tension from the scene

This could probably only work with 12 because I feel like the others would have different reactions at the end of the scene
