As a grown man if your woman has a very important job thing to do on your birthday you do the adult thing and you celebrate your birthday on a different day. you don’t throw a temper tantrum.

The most unbelievable part of this movie is that a New York City chef is always waiting for her to come home and make it to his weekend evening parties all the time.

The fact that Emily, and Nigel and even Miranda were more supportive and straight forward than her group of friends AND BOYFRIEND ever were always makes my jaw drop.

In reality a normal boyfriend would want her to take advantage of a opportunity like that instead of running home to wish him a happy birthday .

I think the main struggle/villain here is Andy's private circle of friends and boyfriend. They all started thinking fashion is a joke so it was hard to think of it as work. So when Andy starts taking it seriously and treating it like a job, her circle still couldn't fathom that what she does is work. So if she missed an event for work, it seems like a poor excuse to them. Sad really, to have a circle that drags you down for focusing on your career and not respecting what you do.

I mean, if you know your gf's gonna work on the particular day of your birthday... can't you just.. move the celebration party one day? I don't know, I do that all the time and nobody seems to get upset.

Let’s talk about for a second how she turned down a huge opportunity to make a business connection, so that she could leave the gala EARLY and be home for her BF’s birthday, yet he was STILL not satisfied when she got there. I’d dump his ass.

What grown man cares that much about his bday. After 25 I am just as happy with watching a game and eating something that I like even if its alone.

Andi's boyfriend and her friends made me dislike this movie more. Also, her boyfriend's a chef. Doesn't he have to work nights and weekends by default?

I honestly love Emily's character. People think that she gave Andy a hard time but not really. She is so devoted to her work and worships Miranda. She always told Andy what exactly needs to be done. I would be annoyed too if I had to work with someone with no INTEREST and respect for the job that I love. Yes, she mocks Andy's dress sense here and there but she always helped Andy do her job and never once sabotaged her. She just cared about getting Miranda's work done properly.

Emily's "thank you" and that "you have big shoes to fill" she said to the new assistant after Andy makes me love her character even more. Finally, a movie where two co workers have a sort of rivalry but never even think of sabotaging each other. Emily Blunt was pure perfection.

The writers really made a mistake by leaving the event as a birthday. If they wanted us to like Nate, then it should have been his first restaurant opening or something. Something that feels equal to a major work event like the one Andy is attending. Something that cannot be rescheduled the way a birthday can. That way his concerns seem more valid. And it makes Andy's guilt and decision at the end of the movie more sensible.

Especially considering we never actually see him making a sacrifice for Andy the way he expects her too. He says he would.... he also says he would support her stripping if it was with dignity. But the problem is that these promises are hypothetical. The audience never gets to see him having to prove any of it. Only Andy does. Which is why he seems to most adult women to be manipulative, controlling, and selfish. Because we recognize these kinds of unequal demands as problematic longterm.

I'm pretty sure the writers didn't intend that. I think they just cut too much of his book character. He was kinder and more supportive in the book. But that was cut so we could see more sympathetic scenes with Nigel, Miranda, and Emily. The filmmakers took the time to give these characters their redemption moments and removed them from villain status. But they ran out of time with Nate. And so, many of us cannot like him.

This is ridiculous... couldn't they just do the celebration on a different day? Like, yeah, force her to leave work on an important event to celebrate your birthday? Sorry, no, the world doesn't revolve around one person.

One thing I feel people forget to mention is that andi also rejected meeting a famous publisher just so she can make it up to him, or try, she even went out and got a cupcake and candle for him! Like it’s a birthday we get you wanna spend it with loved ones but life isn’t gonna be like that, especially in New York, when your chosen partner is going to have a busy life dealing with deadlines, long nights and fast paced work with crazy bosses, what does he not understand?

The fact that a chef got pissy over someone working late is just- WHY DID SHE GO BACK TO THIS MAN-INFANT 😭😭

I re-watched this movie the other day, and realized I REALLY hated her bf and friends. He was horribly unsupportive (IT WAS JUST GONNA BE FOR A YEAR), and her friends were dicks to her in the restaurant after she JUST gave them all thousands of dollars worth of free shit.... FROM the woman they were trying to keep her from talking to.... Like, jfc. Can someone re-edit this movie to just not include them??

1:08 Miranda anticipated Emily would forget considering her ill health. That's why she got second assistant with her in the benefit. I believe recognising risk at the right time can help someone reach the top.

My husband watch the movie with me and said:" What the hell is wrong with her BF and friends?" I can't agree with him more.

The ending where she meets with Nate to apologize in the diner should have been rewritten where she breaks up with him and moves on.
