Very interesting how no one is talking about how masterfully Miranda manipulates Andrea in this scene. She knows Andrea might not like her job, but she is extremely principled, and by saying things like she displayed a lack of work ethic and by comparing her with others, Miranda does exactly what is neededd to unnerve Andrea and stoke her to become better at her job. Devilish and wicked, but extremely effective. Hats off!

To everyone shocked at Anne Hathaway being called “fat”, of course she isn’t actually considered fat, not by normal standards. This scene provides insight into the real fashion industry, where normal, healthy women are considered fat and since Miranda is the embodiment of fashion, she calls Andy as she sees her.She sees her from the POV of a woman who essentially embodies fashion and thinks in this mindset only.

This is exactly how a Narcissist Boss manipulates, devalues, gaslights, and blame shifts. All at the same time.

Is everyone overlooking the fact that Miranda expected Andy to get her home via plane during a hurricane? At that point, I would have left; it's insane to expect that kind of treatment

People in this comment section praising miranda would be the first ones at HR if their boss called them fat lol

I had a terrible boss at my first job. Except this guy would raise his voice at times. I hated having go to work. He drove me to quit. I was only seventeen at the time and quit by the age of nineteen. I learned a lot from working there.... never let anyone step all over you. And I never have ever since.

I think Meryl composed Miranda based on her first experiences as an actress, she has revealed that she suffered from a lot of bullying in the entertainment industry in her younger years as she was viewed as a 'fat girl'...

Anyone else notice the subtle shade she throws past Andy to Emily? Meryl looks over Andy's shoulder to look to Emily and says "stupid" in a whisper out of all words in that sentence. She was pointing out Emily in that simple gesture of her eyes and whisper. It's those little details that sets her apart from other actors.

You know. Andrea really was a shitty employee up until this moment. She openly mocked the profession in front of her boss, for one. Add to that the fact that, in the prior scene she couldn't come up with a solution even though they literally have like infinite resources.

I identify more and more with Miranda's frustration the further in my own career I get.

Her eyes started watering, by the time she's called fat...

A boss like that would give me ulcers.

Miranda always hired "stupid" girls because she knew that smart people would have find her behavior indecent, quitting the job almost immediately, so she preferred to hire less smart girls who resisted longer at her sadism, while giving her great pleasure while torturing them. But at the end she hired a smart girl because she was getting bored, and needed a new toy.

I can't understand how the capability of an employee depends on fulfilling boss's irrational demands!!!

What a real good boss would have said “hey I know it’s your day off but I am stuck in a hurricane and hate the fact that I am going to miss my children’s recital. Could you please record it for me or put me on speaker phone and I promise that I would give you a extra day off next week to make up for it?” That’s how you manage your people and get a desired result. Miranda is an entitled relic of the past and thank god we have moved on from this way of management.

Miranda wasn't "testing" Andy. She was so desperate to get home. She knew she was going to miss yet another important family day. People make it about work but it's really about her being away from her family because of her work yet again. I bet her husband and her daughters gave her the cold shoulder for missing the recital, that morning. She seems on the verge of tears in this scene and utterly powerless to change the situation. She and Andy are very much the same. They choose but hate it when their choices slap them in the face.So they take it out on eachother. YOU decided to fly to florida, Miranda and YOU missed your daughters' recital. Andy; YOU chose this job as a stepping stone so get to stepping! Great movie about the choices we make. In the end, Andy stayed a little too long but it paid off in the end. I'm about to make a choice to use a stepping stone. I have to remind myself that it's just that and not the end-goal.

Miranda was projecting her own failure as a parent.
