CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Andy (Anne Hathaway) interviews to be Miranda's (Meryl Streep) assistant and despite everything going against her, makes an impression.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Lauren Weisberger's best-selling novel about a young woman who stumbles into the hectic worlds of high fashion and publishing comes to the big screen in this comedy. Andrea "Andy" Sachs (Anne Hathaway) is a bright young woman from the Midwest who has just graduated from college and wants to work as a magazine writer. Andy has applied for a job at "Runway," America's most prestigious fashion journal; though Andy has little to no interest in the garment trade, they are one of the only magazines in New York with a job opening -- second assistant to editor Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep). As Andy quickly learns, Miranda is a diva with plenty of power within the magazine business and she isn't afraid to use it, and though Andy lands the job (primarily by being in the right place at the right time), she soon learns that working for Miranda could test the patience of a saint thanks to her endless demands and refusal to acknowledge the end of a work day. Andy struggles to hold on to the job and her sanity, knowing that a recommendation from Miranda can open nearly any door at any magazine, but can she handle the pressure without losing her mind along the way? The Devil Wears Prada also stars Stanley Tucci, Emily Blunt, and Adrian Grenier.

When you watch this as a teenager, you sympathize with Andy. When you come back to it as an adult, zero sympathy.

To be fair, she did not do well in this interview. She wasn't prepared, she knew nothing about the company, she wasn't dressed neatly and she didn't seem excited to work there. She wouldn't have gotten any job with a performance like that. But this movie is great nonetheless.

"Are we doing a before and after piece I don't know about?" Stanley Tucci is the best in this movie (and in every movie he's in).

"Basically it's either this or Auto Universe." The first time that I watched this movie, I sympathized with Andy. But the more I watch it, the more I get the point: throughout the movie, she is constantly playing the victim about how her boss and co-workers treat her. But she made it clear from the start that she thinks of herself as superior to everyone else around her and she has no interest in the fashion world, so how are they supposed to respect her?

Meryl moves like a dancer. Every movement is orchestrated and rehearsed, from her head, neck, hands, fingertips, arms, to the way she speaks, sits, etc.... She is insanely good, it is like watching a ballerina.
Watch it again without the sound and you will see.

Meryl Streep’s comments be so emotionless, quiet, and straight to the point but they still have so much meaning. Her character shows you that you don’t need to get loud and angry to have an effect on people.

She was hired because of luck. At that time, Miranda wanted a different type of girl as her assistant: not the slim, stylish one who would be proven inadequate later on. Other than that, Andy was horrible in the interview. It is unacceptable that she showed up without having done some research about the magazine first and having made an effort to learn some information about the editor in chief.

I can imagine when she asked Emily to call Andy back

Miranda: "urm Emily. call her. I want her"
Emily: "....what"
Miranda: "thats all"

Andy got the job because she turned around, squeaked on her shoes, and talked back very confidently--that she was really smart, a very hard worker and that she learned very quickly. Miranda's bitchiness in this scene was a test, to see if Andy had what it took to be her assistant. If Andy folded and left with her tail between her legs, then Miranda knew she wasn't cut out for the position. But Andy didn't fold--she got a little angry and she spoke up. That and Andy's impressive resume (which Miranda already knew about as soon as she read a bit of the resume) is what got Andy the job. Interest in fashion and the magazine was incidental, because those are not the skills one needs to make it in a very cutthroat world.
