It all comes down to how well you set boundaries. We are all broken to some degree. Men with no boundaries take on the burden of trying to "fix" the woman, draining himself in the process. Setting boundaries can be hard, but you have to know what is your responsibility, and what isn't.

Totally agree that they need professional help in order to heal. Some broken women (and men) are entirely self serving and become manipulative so that they are resistant to change depending on their personality and age, but are more than happy to manipulate and influence you (if you are weak) to bend to their will. But they also know how to either cater to your ego and make you feel good when it warrants, but also have no problem riding the emotional rollercoaster and make sure you are in the front seat with them without a seatbelt when the ride curves downward and wheel barrels like Tom Cruise in Top Gun, not knowing where to crash land. Some get stuck in this unpredictable dynamic of high and low with extremes on both ends. You pay a major price for the lows, and get some highs in return for brief moment (or just on the surface, maybe some fantastic sex out of it), but it never works out happily in the long run if you want stability, a strong sense of fulfillment and emotional maturity.

I have always been a nurturing type of person. I've always felt the need to try to help or comfort people I see are struggling, whether it be with self esteem or loneliness or any number of other things. My problem is that I feel devoted to trying to help them, and when they start relying on me too much, I find it hard to break things of so they can work on themselves because I don't want to contribute to their pain. I just wish there was a way for me to support and help them while also helping them realize that I am not the answer to their problems, and that they have to work on themselves.

One reason that men stay with these women is that they feel deeply in love with them. You talked about focusing on the "externals, " but those things are a big part of why people fall in love. Character, virtue, and "having it all together" are very important, but they don't equal romantic love in and of themselves--especially for men. It's really hard to move on to someone else when your life experience has been that it's very hard and rare to find a woman who truly takes your heart.

Sometimes I hear my mother in what you say. She was unsentimental, tough-minded but always caring. She always urged me to act out of respect for myself and for others. If you are in a marriage or relationship, you have to be ready if your beloved suffers an emotional trauma that could “break” her: an unexpected blow or betrayal by a friend or family member, a career setback, something outside of your control that has a terrible effect on her. This in fact happened to us almost 15 years ago and it took tremendous effort on my part to save her, but it wasn’t just me, she responded to my love and we prevailed.

We are all broken and realising that makes us whole and human. I am compassionate towards women but i never take on her problems because i will be denying her the gift of taking responsibility for her life and dealing with her issues.I stay away from women who don't take responsibility for her life and are not working on themselves.

We are all broken, for someone to not want someone who is not broken is why most relationships dont work. We are supposed to share in the burdens of others especially those we choose to love. When ee leave we simply pass the buck to the next person. Alot of times the strongest love comes through the love we show others who are broken more then our selves.

On a related area: a simple fact you can't go out with women who say no when asked out--you have to go out with who is willing to go out with you (and that may not be who you are deeply attracted to) or you don't go out.
