DPReview TV: Atomos Ninja V Review

Almost all new cameras include impressive video features, but for the best results you'll often need an off-camera recorder. Chris and Jordan take a look at the brand new Ninja V from Atomos, and explain why it might just be one of the most useful tools you can add to your camera.

For more information, check out our article 'Why would I want an external monitor/recorder?'

Congratulations to Jordan for receiving the coveted PCND certification!

I've had the Ninja Inferno for about a year now and loved it. Ninja V seems like a solid small-form-factor alternative, and the NDI & timecode (and hopefully SDI eventually?) add-ons are super clutch. Wish I could pick one up to play with.

I'm down for an increase in video talk ;)

Amazing production values here for a review - the unqiue introductory wide shot at 0:23, the selection of a perfect natural backdrop, and the audio is on point - I'm guessing that's a lav on Chris' jacket.

@7:45 Jordan was talking about the Sony A7S III? 🤔 ..perhaps he has one already but can't talk about it.

I have an A7II and I'm planning to buy atomos ninja v in near future. I thought that i will be able to shoot 10bit prores 422 with the camera. Is this correct?

Interesting you mentioned that there isnt that much of a difference shooting with or without the Ninja V on a XT3. But you only talked about image quality, what about workflow? Avoiding the internal H265 codec could be a huge plus, especially when editing in premiere (it doesnt handle h265 too well as I heard). Could be a huge plus for the other cameras aswell, especially considering you can record to SSD

Dear Jordan, I absolutely want to see more video content. In fact I want Chris to only appear halfway through the video telling us he’s ‘the photoguy’ and we know what that means. :) Sincerely.

Excellent review! That unit looks awesome. What mics/ audio recorder would you guys recommend for this type of work?

Excellent video. Yes, Jordan! More video! Would it be possible to show a complete bts of one of your own reviews? Planing, shooting, cutting and grading. What are the challenges on right exposure when shooting log? Thanks. Keep on! 😁

Jordan, I could see you were sitting on a log but do you shoot log on the GH5?

Amazing review, thanks! Does it a have a nine-grid that helps frame the shot? It's a super basic feature but not sure if it has

0:11 Could you link to that exact HDMI to microHDMI cable you guys are using (I see they're good for UHD to 23.98). I'm looking for an alternative to the one Atomos sells for $99, that is HDMI 2.0a (yes, "a", is an update; there's actually 2.0b, and higher specified cables). I think Atomos' coiled cable is good up to 4K60.
I think the specs for those are supposed to work for HDR. If your cables specs work for 4K without limitations, it would be great!

You're mentioning the brilliant autofocus on the Sony A7iii. I've been using both the Flame and the Ninja V on my A7iii and just FYI the face recognition autofocus does not work when connecting an HDMI monitor/recorder. It still has good autofocus features and it hasn't been much of a problem for me, but there is a difference you may want to be aware of.

Fan noise has been mentioned in other reviews. Has anyone recorded it to see how prevalent it is? Also curious if this is really worth it for A7iii shooters. I'm assuming for punch ins (4K footage, 1080 timeline) I would see an uptick in quality just because of bit rate?
